When Michael Meacham began looking for a job after being laid off from a gas station in April, he had no idea of the nightmare ahead of him.

Applying to dozens of places without success, Meacham said he completed an online application at Wal-Mart early last month.

But when he submitted his Social Security number, the retailer’s employee database listed the 21-year-old student as already working there.

"I was shocked," Meacham said. "At first, I thought I was hired without knowing it, but when I saw I had a schedule and was working, I was confused."

Meacham would later learn that the Arizona Department of Economic Security would list him as being employed at six different places between April 2008 and January 2009 - places he’s never worked. Throughout the ordeal, Meacham was denied unemployment compensation because DES believed he was working.

But Meacham’s findings helped lead Mesa police to the arrest of Jorge Armondo Rodriguez, 30, an illegal immigrant from Mexico who was living in Mesa, on suspicion of identity theft. Rodriguez admitted to police he was using Meacham’s Social Security number for employment purposes and to make money for his family.

"There’s a lot of holes to jump through and go around," said Meacham, a Phoenix College student. "This has been strenuous and stressful to say the least."

Rodriguez had been working at the Wal-Mart at Mesa Riverview, 857 N. Dobson Road, for about a year using Meacham’s Social Security number, according to a Mesa police report.

When Meacham applied for unemployment compensation through the DES the same day he applied at Wal-Mart, his DES report also listed him as working at the Wal-Mart - and five other places he said he never has: Paradise Bakery, Rallys, Jack in the Box, Frontera Communications and the International House of Pancakes.

"The report shows I made a lot of money, but that was not the case," Meacham said. "I last worked as a counselor at a Cub Scout camp in Payson in June. That money lasted me through the summer, and I started looking for jobs again at the beginning of August."

After learning from a Wal-Mart manager in Phoenix that the employee database showed him working at the Wal-Mart at Mesa Riverview, Meacham went to that store to inform them he did not work there. That store manager then told Meacham to call Mesa police.

After police questioned Rodriguez at Wal-Mart the first time, he had introduced himself as Michael, but then told officers his real name. Police later arrested Rodriguez at the Cracker Barrel restaurant, 1007 N. Dobson Road, about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Rodriguez told officers that Meacham was letting him use his card, and when officers asked him to describe Meacham, he told them that he was a 21-year-old Hispanic man. Meacham is white.

Meacham, who was reissued the same Social Security number last month, remains unemployed, and he told the Tribune on Thursday that the DES has denied him unemployment compensation until he can provide proof that it was not him working at Wal-Mart and to show that he was being proactive to do something to correct the problem.

A representative from the Department of Economic Security could not be reached for comment and did not return phone calls to the Tribune Thursday seeking comment.

Meacham also placed a six-month freeze on his credit while he hopes authorities such as the DES, the Social Security Administration, and Mesa police sort everything out.

Although the Mexican illegal alien was arrested by local police, he most likely will not serve any prison time for the numerous felonies he’s committed or charged and deported for illegal entry into the U.S.

MOUNT PLEASANT - State police believe that a 19-year-old illegal immigrant charged with drunken driving early this morning drove the wrong way for at least 6 miles on the Taconic State Parkway before a trooper and a Mount Pleasant officer pulled him over.

Henry M. Garcia of Ossining appeared this morning in Town Court, where Town Justice Nicholas C. Maselli set bond at $100,000 and ordered him to return on Sept. 24.

Assistant District Attorney Michael Ashraf - noting that Garcia had a blood-alcohol content more than three times the legal limit, that he may face a felony charge of reckless endangerment and his legal status - had requested a $1 million bond.

Garcia, who was stopped at 1:37 a.m. after police received more than a dozen calls from frightened motorists, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.27 percent, police said. The legal threshold for driving while intoxicated is 0.08 percent.

Police saw Garcia make a U-turn, so he was heading in the right direction, just before they stopped him. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated, misdemeanors, being an unlicensed driver and a several other traffic infractions.

Ashraf said, and Maselli agreed, that Garcia may soon face a felony charge of reckless endangerment.

Earlier this month, Gregorio Pena, 44, of the Bronx was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated after he drove north in the Taconic’s southbound lanes for almost two miles. Pena, who police said had a blood-alcohol level of 0.20 percent, was charged with felony reckless endangerment.

State police Investigator Joseph Becerra said police believe that Garcia drove south in the northbound lane for at least 6 miles, possibly more.

"The fact that over a dozen people called makes us believe that he had been on the parkway for some time," Becerra said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the state police at 914-769-2600.

Garcia, who is from Guatemala , described himself as an illegal immigrant, Becerra said. He has no driver’s license.

He was driving a 2000 Toyota SUV that belongs to an acquaintance from Mount Kisco. Garcia has been working at the Olympic diner in Ossining as a bus boy.

Notice that he’s not be charged with illegal entry into the U.S. Why? Because until he kills someone, only then will the police maybe consider calling ICE to put an immigration hold on him and even that is no guarantee he will actually be picked up and deported. Inept and corrupt Judges continue to deny requests for high bonds ($1 million dollars in Garcia’s case) for these dangerous criminals allowing them to walk free (Here’s a shocker: After making bail, illegal aliens never show up for their court dates—even though the lyin’ thievin’ criminals promise–cross their hearts and hope to die– the dumbass/corrupt Judges that they would) thereby putting citizens’ lives at risk.

I wonder what kind of punishment Armondo Rodriguez and Garcia would get if they committed crimes like these in countries like Pakistan or Samoli.

These illegal aliens ruin peoples lives by stealing identities, and murder innocent victims by driving drunk. They should be thrown in prison for a minimum of 10 years and then deported.

NYC newspapers wouldn't mention immigration status for such minor offenses.

I wonder if Meacham cabn sue Wal-mart for hiring (receiving) a man with a stolen ID? There's got to be something Americans can do to stop this heinous leaching.
