Company owner pleads innocent to hiring illegal immigrants

    Associated Press -
    August 25, 2007 5:25 PM ET

GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A construction company owner has pleaded innocent to charges he used illegal immigrants to work on bridges and other critical infrastructure projects in at least three states, including Tennessee.

Jose S. Gonzalez is charged with hiring undocumented workers from Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico to work on projects that include the Interstate 40 seismic retro fit in Memphis.

At least 77 illegal workers were arrested during raids in March, including 26 employees of Gonzalez's company, Tarrasco Steel.

A spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the employees had fake social security numbers and did not have proper welding certifications.

The contractor's name is Jose Gonzalez? And we are supposed to believe he didn't hire any illegals from Central America?
