    Congressional Democrats Grow Wary of Spitzer License Plan

    Democratic members of Congress, having watched Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton stumble on the question of whether states should give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, are growing increasingly agitated over Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to do so and are calling for him to shelve the idea.

    The opposition is especially strong among Democrats bracing for the prospect of tough re-election battles next year in politically moderate and conservative regions of New York; they have begun to speak out on the issue and, in many cases, have disavowed the plan.

    Hall to Spitzer: Withdraw your driver’s license proposal

    Washington – Congressman John Hall of Dover Plains Wednesday announced his opposition to Governor Spitzer’s plan to allow illegal immigrants to obtain New York driver’s licenses.

    Hall said to provide those licenses to illegal immigrants could present security risks and make New York a magnet state for anyone who wants documents.

    “Driver’s licenses can be used for what they call breeder documents that can be used to get bank accounts, to get credit cards, to get leases to get other identification and build up a paper identity that can be confusing to employers,â€
