    INFURIATING EDITORIAL

    An Unwelcome Wave
    Winston-Salem Journal
    Monday, August 8, 2005

If the Minuteman Project hasn't already spread to this state, it's probably only a matter of time before it does - unless government officials and citizens show what America's really all about and stand up to this backward movement.

The movement, a volunteer one that started about a year ago and vows to guard America from illegal immigration, began on the Mexican border and has now spread to spots nationwide - including neighboring Tennessee, according to The Associated Press. "It's like O'Leary's cow has kicked over the lantern," said Carl "Two Feathers" Whitaker. He's an American Indian activist and perennial gubernatorial candidate who runs the Tennessee Volunteer Militiamen.

Legend has it that Mrs. O'Leary's cow started the Great Chicago fire of 1871. The Minuteman Project could ultimately be just as detrimental. Earlier this year, hundreds from the group rallied to patrol Arizona's border with Mexico. The movement, unjustly named for real patriots, now has chapters in 18 states, including in California, Utah, Minnesota and Maine, according to The Associated Press.

The Tennessee group's goal, at least for now, seems relatively subdued - exposing those who employ illegal immigrants.

There are certainly problems in the way the U.S. government patrols its borders and deals with the employment of illegal immigrants. But those are problems the government should rectify - not a group of vigilantes. This is supposed to be a land ruled by law - not mobs.

It's doubtful this group could provide much information the government would consider valuable regarding companies that employ illegal immigrants. The government often seems to all but wink at that practice - and at the companies that rake in big bucks by paying illegal immigrants low wages. And, contrary to popular belief, many illegal immigrants do pay taxes.

The Homeland Security Department, while not denouncing the Minuteman Project, does emphasize the need for trained law enforcement in immigration matters. Indeed. One Hispanic activist in Knoxville said he fears that the Minuteman volunteers are "spreading a lot of misinformation and are terrorizing the ethnic community in the area."

An unhealthy tension is building nationwide between Hispanics and Minutemen. In Las Cruces, N.M., on a recent Sunday, Hispanics marched against Minutemen, calling them racist - a charge the group denies. Other Hispanics say the group's real aim is to force them out of the country. There seems to be a ring of truth in that.

But Hispanics aren't leaving, and many are making valuable contributions to this country, often by doing the jobs no one else will take. Many, of course, are here illegally. North Carolinians especially bothered by that should follow the American process and push their politicians to enact immigration reform. And they should condemn those who reject the American way by taking the law into their own hands.

PLEASE go to this website and bombard them with letters to the Editor about this UNBELIEVABLE editorial. They only allow one letter per person every thirty days and I've already had one published during the last 30 days. I'm going to submit one anyway but we need a BUNCH here!

Below is my response to the editorial:

In "The Unwelcome Wave" in the editorial of August 8th, you are sadly mistaken about the perpetrators. It is the lawbreakers who are flooding our state, NOT the Minutemen, which this title depicts.

Your bleeding heart position represents the minority in North Carolina in respect to a need for a Minuteman project here. In order to save our state from invasion, the citizens of North Carolina must do the job that our federal government refuses to do--enforce the laws of the land.

These Patriots who have decided to take matters into their own hands are NOT vigilantes. The Minutemen are dedicated citizens who have decided that they cannot watch their states destroyed by illegal immigrants.

In order for you to see the need for a project like that here, read your own paper. Notice the crime statistics, our state budget, our job market, our prison population, our health care system. These lawbreakers are sucking our state dry.

Your claim that Americans are not willing to take these jobs is because they are not willing to live twenty to a house in order to survive on slave wages. It is the illegals who are being exploited and the racism claim is being exploited as well in order to justify an unjustifiable situation.

This paper is a typical leftist rag and its editors are those mush minded products of liberal journalism schools. They have the insight and political acumen of a garden slug.

Their reasoning is so obviously flawed, it would embarrass a six year old. This is a key reason the masses in this country hold such idiotic and naive views of the world. This read this garbage and because it is in print, they tend to believe it.

We need more realistic, conservative editors in this country, but I suppose that is like asking for realistic conservative college professors. The statement is an oxymoron.

That oxymoron sure applies to the MORONS at the Winston-Salem Journal. You're right--just because it's in print, people BELIEVE it and I have never heard such a bunch of BS in my LIFE as that editorial. WHY would ANYONE buy into that little theory??? I would be willing to bet that they won't print my response. They are going to come back and say I've already had one printed within the 30 day period. IF they do that, I'm going to tell them to hold it until my 30 days is up.

They probably won't print mine either. I tried to keep it "pithy." Here it is...

You editorial “Unwelcome Wave is either naïve or disingenuous. You are barking up the wrong tree.

The illegals are the problem, not the watchdog groups. There are some 1-2 Million illegals pouring across our borders each year and our government is hiding its head in the sand. No doubt the terrorists of the world are in agreement with you. Leave the borders open and unwatched. That way, it will be easier to sneak in suicide bombers and terror cells, or maybe even a suitcase nuke.

Some in the Minutemen and other similar organizations may be xenophobic and nationalistic. They are at least trying and you can’t name one violent act against illegals. Illegal immigrants do take jobs legal citizens would take. Just ask those in the construction industry. They drive down wages. Their gangs are infesting our cities. They clog our emergency rooms and siphon off billions in social services.

You can keep your head firmly planted in the sand if you wish. One day you will wake up to an America you don’t like very much.

    My letter:
    letter:
Your title of your editorial Unwelcome Wave exactly expresses my sentiments concerning the wave of illegal immigration that is occuring daily to our country.
We are being overwhelmed by people who have decided on their own that they should be in America without bothering to go the legal route. They bring disease, gangs and crime in an unbroken chain.
American citizens do not appreciate the illegals taking their jobs and destroying their neighborhoods. The MinuteMen are NOT vigilantes, they are Patriots. They are standing up for our rights, for our country and doing a job that our government won't do.

When you wake up one morning with 60 illegals having moved into one house in YOUR neighborhood you'll sing a different tune, good sir. Thank you,

Maybe you should have added also, that soon. Maybe an illegal will have her job. At a lower rate.
