Lawmakers are still at odds over whether to include protections for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in an end-of-year spending bill.

Democratic and Republican lawmakers are still at odds over how to protect recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in an end-of-year spending bill, as the Dec. 8 deadline looms.

A bipartisan group of 13 former top national security officials sent a letter to Congress Tuesday urging lawmakers to pass the Dream Act as a replacement for DACA by year’s end, Business Insider reported.

The signees, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and former Secretary of the U.S. Air Force Deborah Lee James, called for the Dream Act to be included in the spending bill that must pass to avoid a government shutdown, per Business Insider.

"Neither the House nor the Senate has agreed upon a legislative solution to resolve this critical issue. Time is running out," the letter stated. "With every day that passes, these Dreamers are getting closer to the reality of deportation."

DACA protects undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children, also known as Dreamers. President Donald Trump announced in September he was ending the program, giving Congress six months to craft replacement legislation.

The Dream Act would protect nearly all of the 800,000 Dreamers from deportation and provide a 13-year path to citizenship, CNN reported.

It’s unusual for bipartisan former officials to collectively speak on any issue like the security officials did in their letter, according to Axios.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said Tuesday a DACA resolution will not be included in the year-end bill, although Democrats, including Sen. Kamala Harris, have threatened not to vote for the bill unless it offers protections for DACA recipients, per The Hill.

Democrats are confident Trump won’t let protections expire completely, Axios reported, and they believe they can add a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers to the must-pass bill. In exchange, Democrats may allow some increases in border security, excluding a southern border wall, per Axios.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced Wednesday it will review DACA renewal applications that arrived late because of a mail delay, The New York Times reported. The agency previously refused to accept any late applications.

Dreamers had until Oct. 5 to submit renewals for their two-year DACA permits if theirs expired before March, and 154,000 people were eligible to apply. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services received 132,000 applications on time while 4,000 applications arrived late, The New York Times reported. It’s unclear how many applications were affected by mail delivery issues.

There are three U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services intake locations: in Phoenix, Chicago and Lewisville, Texas. The U.S. Postal Service took the blame this week for a mail delay in Chicago, per The New York Times.

It is not a "critical" issue.

The simple way to solve this problem is let work permits expire...like all other work permits expire and they MUST leave the country with the whole family. No renewals on our soil, no extension and NO path to stay.

They should have NEVER been given Deferred Deportation and NEVER been issued work permits!

ENDING THE ANCHOR BABY SCAM IS A CRITICAL ISSUE!

WE NEED TO SEND THE MESSAGE LOUD AND CLEAR...DO NOT COME HERE ILLEGALLY...DO NOT DUMP YOUR CHILDREN ON OUR DOORSTEP.

    DO NOT DETAIN...DEPORT THEM ALL!
ILLEGAL ALIENS HAVE "BROKEN" OUR IMMIGRATION SYSTEM

DO NOT REWARD THEM - DEPORT THEM ALL

Any way you look at it Trump is not doing what he said he would do. The lawmakers are very aware that most people are not in favor of any form of amnesty for any illegal aliens. They are all bending over backward trying to figure out some way to placate their donors and special illegal interest groups while trying not to upset us as much as possible. They will try to tack something on to another bill in the middle of the night hoping we will not notice we are being screwed. When we complain they will quote that fake poll that says 85% of Americans want to give amnesty to the DACAs. You can bet whatever they do we will not like it. Our Congress is a total sell-out to special interests.
