Crash kills migrants walking to US border to claim asylum

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) — Mexican authorities are reporting a fatal crash involving migrants on the highway between Juarez and Chihuahua City, Mexico.

A vehicle reportedly swerving to avoid several families walking along the Pan-American Highway overturned and struck a separate group on the side of the road. Chihuahua state authorities said the crash occurred at 9:19 a.m. and resulted in the death of two adults and serious injuries to another adult and a child.

Six ambulances responded to the scene and took the victims to medical facilities in Chihuahua City, which is 220 miles south of Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas.

A video obtained by a KTSM/Border Report camera crew shows an overturned white vehicle and some of the victims lying about. A woman cries and screams for her child in the background.

News reports out of Chihuahua City said the victims were Venezuelan migrants on their way to surrender to U.S. authorities in El Paso in hopes of obtaining political asylum.

Border Report has previously documented the constant trickle of families and single adults getting off trains in Chihuahua City and walking to the border, often with children in tow.
