Anti-Arpaio march underway with about 1,000 marchers

Anti-Arpaio march underway with about 1,000 marchers

    by Heather Hoch - May. 2, 2009 10:20 AM
    The Arizona Republic .

About a thousand protesters are marching Saturday against the illegal-immigration policies of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The march began at about about 10 a.m. at Wells Fargo Plaza in Phoenix and was to go near the Tent City jail. The Sheriff's Office was taking security measures at Tent City and Durango jails Maricopa County sheriff's deputies, officers, and posse volunteers will be searching for contraband related to the protest. Inmates will also be confined to their cells or tents all day Saturday, as protesters are anticipated around Tent City during the day.

The protest has been publicized by anti-Arpaio activists on Spanish media for the past few weeks and was expected to draw 2,000 to 3,000 people.

However, attendance at immigration reform rallies across the country on Friday drew fewer protesters than organizers had hoped for, possibly due to the swine flu outbreak. According to a document from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, the added security measures are being set in place in attempt to suppress any violence that the protest may incite.

Any violation found in a search of a visitor to tent city could result in arrest, the document said. The cells of approximately 2,000 inmates will also be searched for weapons and contraband.

I wonder how many are being bused in?
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

What a great man to want to continue to do a job that involves such criticism and attacks. I have such respect for him as law enforcement official who continues to face the lion's den of viciousness against him personally and as a law enforcement official for doing his job to protect the citizenry of his county. The attacks are persistent because he stands up to the backlash of the open borders and illegal alien supporters.

I am going to try to reach his office today to thank him for standing up for so many all over our nation in constant pursuit to secure our borders and our nation.

The fact that some in the Hispanic community would not attend the May Day marches and the anti-Arpaio march for fear of the Mexican flu virus, says alot about their hidden fear of people that may come from Mexico.

These pro-illegal activists understand that some in the Hispanic community would rather not be in contact with marchers, but if one of our side says that marching on May Day may spread the Mexican flu virus, they would call him a RACIST!

Arpaio supporters rally in Sun City West
    14 commentsby Channing Turner - May. 2, 2009 12:13 PM
    The Arizona Republic

On the same morning thousands gathered in Phoenix to show their disapproval for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a separate rally in the West Valley attracted supporters of the sheriff and his controversial policies toward illegal immigration.

Approximately 150 people gathered at the R.H. Johnson Recreation Center in Sun City West to hear Arizona politicians and the sheriff himself speak in favor of tough immigration enforcement.

"This illegal immigration [issue] has made me the poster boy for illegal immigration enforcement," Arpaio said to the crowd. "I took an oath of office to enforce the law ... If people want to change things, why don't they change the law?"
The sheriff's speech focused on his 12 years of experience working at border and his belief that representatives from Washington were out of touch with Arizona's problems.

"Most politicians don't know where Mexico is . . . We're not going to surrender to Washington on this issue," he said. "[There are] 900 square miles of this county, and I represent every inch."

Among the main opinions heard at the rally was the belief in a link between illegal immigration and problems like violence, drugs and the recent fears over swine flu, though Arpaio critics say violence has more to do with America's drug problem than immigration.

Sen. Jack Harper, R-Surprise, said a disproportionate number of illegal immigrants become involved in violent crime and drugs.

Asked if he had information to support that claim, he said, "The sheriff will tell you [the statistics.] I saw them a couple weeks ago - good statistics."

Harper stressed the sheriff's immigration enforcement as a necessary complement to other types of law enforcement.

"They're not just targeting illegal immigrants," he said, adding that many illegal immigrants are discovered during routine traffic stops.

Several crowd members carried American flags and signs reading, "Way to go Sheriff Joe" and "What part of illegal don't you understand?"

Jennifer Self, a resident of Sun City West, came to the rally to show her concern over an issue she says frightens her.

"I understand the people who want to come here and make a better life," she said. "Our family came over from Europe, but they came through the front door.

"I have two grandchildren," she added. "My grandchildren aren't going to live the life I did - I fear for them."

John Chaney, another local resident, organized the event. He said the rushed timetable for the rally and only limited media coverage hurt the turnout. Several speakers during the rally questioned why no television cameras had turned out.

"I think we should have had a lot more [people]," he said.

However, Chaney said he was pleased with the community's support.

"These people in these communities are the core supporters," he said, referring to Sun City West and Legislative District 4, which hosted the rally.

People crossing the United States borders are breaking the Immigration Law. This is a crime like other crimes. Police are to catch DWI and illegal in the act and put them in jail and run record checks on each.

What is so hard for some not taxed enough people legal or illegal not to get about Immigration Law? The 20% opposition to our current Immigration Laws is comprised of illegals, guest workers, unlawful employers, and government traitors.

Thousands of protesters march along Van Buren on their way to Tent City as they protest Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's policy to enforce illegal immigration and alleged abuses in his jails.

Darryl Webb, TribuneThousands descended upon a row of jails Saturday in Phoenix to protest Sheriff Joe Arpaio's policy of enforcing immigration laws.

The protest march, which began in downtown Phoenix in front of the building that houses the Maricopa County sheriff's administrative offices, was almost seven miles and had all of the familiar sights and sounds of a protest against Arpaio.

Before the marchers arrived at their destination near Tent City and Estrella Jail, two opposing groups of about 50 lined Durango Street.

On one side there were Hispanics, some with T-shirts the read "(expletive) Arpaio," "He's Finished," and various other T-shirts that showed affiliations with labor unions and groups associated with the march.

Salvador Reza, who helped organize the Walk for Respect said he wants to see President Barack Obama or Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano take away Arpaio's authority to enforce immigration laws, which he got through an agreement with the federal government.

"In his hands it's empowering someone with no regard for civil rights, no regard for human rights, no regard for humanity," Reza said.

On the other side of the street were various groups that want tougher immigration laws and individuals who support Arpaio. They held placards and waved flags. Some were also carrying sidearms.

"Nobody I know is against him," said Karen Brogdon, who drove about 35 miles from Wittman to hold a sign in support of Arpaio. "Where do these people come from?"

As the marchers got closer, Phoenix police officers in black military pants and bullet-proof vests lined both sides of the streets.

One side chanted "si se puede" (yes we can) while the other chanted "USA."

It took about 25 minutes for the marchers, who covered three lanes on the street, to pass.

Several people from each side got into a sort of standoff with their video cameras. Someone from one side would come over and stick cameras in the faces of the opposing group, which in turn would cause them to point their cameras back at them.

Marchers also traded obscene hand gestures, insults and tough talk with the Arpaio supporters. No one traded punches, though.

Arpaio was on hand and said that if the protesters want his immigration authority to be taken away, they should try to get the law changed rather than march.

"If they think they're going to intimidate me, they can march everyday," Arpaio said.
