U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz on Monday suggested beefing up resources on the southern border to help thwart a “serious threat” from thousands of Central American migrants who recently entered Mexico and are making their way toward the U.S. border.

The Texas Republican suggested mobilizing the National Guard or amassing more Border Patrol agents as the caravan continues to make its way north. A United Nations spokesman said more than 7,000 migrants have joined the caravan, U.S. News and World Report reported. Their final destinations remain unclear, but Texas' Rio Grande Valley has served as the main entry point for tens of thousands of Central Americans for nearly five years.

"I think this caravan is a serious threat. When you see thousands of people pledging to come violate U.S. law, to cross into this country illegally, we have to treat that seriously. We have to stop it,” Cruz told reporters after speaking at a Texas Oil and Gas Association forum in Houston. “Whether that means putting Border Patrol at the border to stop them or whether that means calling up the National Guard, which President Trump has done before, which President Bush has done before — that even President Obama called up the National Guard.”

President Donald Trump ordered National Guard units to the border in April in an effort to stop the flow of people entering the country illegally. But despite the deployment and an increase in interior enforcement, tens of thousands of migrants, the majority from Central America, have continued to cross the southern border seeking asylum. In summer 2014, former Gov. Rick Perry also deployed units to the border, which Gov. Greg Abbott kept in place after taking office.

Abbott’s office did not immediately respond to a comment about Cruz’s remarks Monday afternoon.

Last week, Mexican authorities said they had plans in the works to accommodate some of the migrants by offering visas or employment, CNN reported. According to media reports, the migrants entered the Mexican state of Chiapas, which borders Guatemala at the Suchiate River, over the weekend and Mexican officers used tear gas to stop the migrants after they reportedly broke through barricades on the bridge leading to Mexico. The migrants who could not enter Mexico at the port of entry instead swam across the river or paid people to ferry them across on rafts.

Trump tweeted on Monday that Mexican authorities were unable to stymie the flow of migrants, and suggested, without citing evidence, that “criminals and Middle Easterners” are mixed in with the travelers. “I have alerted Border Patrol and Military that this is a National [Emergency]. Must change laws!” he tweeted.

The president also reiterated his threat to cut off or reduce aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, the countries of origin for most Central American migrants.

So ted Cruz wants to put the Border Patrol there to STOP them---what with teddy bears and soccer balls? When has the Border Patrol ever STOPPED anyone?

Traditional methods work very well. Just have lots of it. It's all about the numbers. If there's 14,000 to 20,000 of them, you need 40,000 to 50,000 active troops to deal with it. We have 205,000 Army Reservists and about 40,000 Marine Corp Reserves on top of Active Military.

If Border Patrol could do that in 2013 under Obama why hasn't that been done for the past 642 days under Trump instead of rolling out the Welcome Mat?

Yes, how can I help southBronx? Trump definitely has the Presidential Authority to use active military and military reserves if needed to stop the caravan and all other illegal immigration into the United States, because it's a national security issue of prime importance and is vital to the defense of our borders and the protection of US citizens. None of these people are who they say they are, and even if they were, it wouldn't matter. The United States has every right under our Constitution to prohibit immigration, Article 1, Section 9, after the year 1808, and we're way beyond that time frame.

The migration or importation of such persons as any of the states now existing shall think proper to admit, shall not be prohibited by the Congress prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight, but a tax or duty may be imposed on such importation, not exceeding ten dollars for each person.

The Congress has prohibited illegal immigration. The Congress has limited legal immigration. The Congress has limited "asylum" to those fleeing persecution by a government.

This is the only cause allowed for "asylum" in the United States:

Burden of proof

(i) In general

The burden of proof is on the applicant to establish that the applicant is a refugee, within the meaning of section 1101(a)(42)(A) of this title. To establish that the applicant is a refugee within the meaning of such section, the applicant must establish that race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion was or will be at least one central reason for persecuting the applicant.

No citizen of Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador or Mexico or most any other country in the world qualifies for "asylum" under US asylum laws. They just don't. They are the same race, the same nationality, same religion, same social group and hold the same political opinions as virtually everyone else in their country and even if they are different in one or more of these categories, there is NO EVIDENCE whatsoever that the Governments of these countries persecute them in any way, shape or form.

In fact, the President of Honduras has told them all to come back and he will find them jobs. The Presidents of Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador have negotiated a $2.6 billion grant from the United States to do all types of development and infrastructure to help their countries move forward with better economic development that creates jobs for their citizens, all of which is jeopardy now because of this brazen illegal caravan marching through 3 countries. Other aid they have asked for and routinely received from the US is now also in jeopardy. We also have a nice trade agreement with these 3 countries, called CAFTA, so there is no basis at all for "asylum" for anyone from these 3 countries or Mexico who has their nice new trade agreement with the United States that requires higher wages be paid in certain industries in Mexico which will raise wages for everyone in that country. Honduras for example has free education paid for by the government, all the way through ... college. Hondurans are not "persecuted". Guatemalans are not "persecuted". El Salvadorans are not "persecuted". Mexicans are not "persecuted". Any "asylum" claim from any of these people is a fraud.

We must suspend all asylum laws for at least 5 years or until they are repealed. We don't need "asylum" laws in the United States. It's quite clear why we specifically need them repealed in their entirety. The only "asylum" that could or should be granted is one by the President, not a Cabinet Head, for assistance in a military operation for the United States, and only then, on a very selective basis.

Any other "refugee" would need to apply through the UN Refugee Program which could land you anywhere in the world, and for those coming to the US, those are subject to vetting and so forth and subject to the US cap on same.

Their local law enforcement is NOT rounding up the gangs and cartel.

They are fleeing "violence". Stop the violence by mass round up of the gangs!

Let the NATO troops do it now!

These are small countries and they can knock this out, even if it is one country at a time.

Give them 60 days to put them all in prisons!

Send every one of these illegal aliens back including the ones here to take THEIR neighborhoods back!

They should all be home, in their country, WITH their families...having a better life on THEIR soil...not ours!
