Cruz Offers Bill to End Swamp Anguish Over Migrant Children

Cruz Offers Bill to End Swamp Anguish Over Migrant Children

    June 19, 2018

    Neil Munro

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has drafted a “Protect Kids and Parents Act” that would end the separation of migrant parents from their children and would offer emotional solace to the many Democrats, Hollywood figures and establishment GOP players who are urging that something be done.

“We can fix this,” Cruz said in a reassuring Monday statement, adding:

If my Democratic colleagues will join me, not play politics, but work to solve the problem, we can start to end family separation this week.

Cruz’s fix will ensure family unity by keeping migrant parents and their children in government centers until their legal cases are completed, and until they are either sent home or accepted into the United States:

While these cases are pending, families should stay together. Children belong with their mothers and fathers. Once their cases have been adjudicated — under my legislation, in no longer than 14 days — those who meet the legal standard should be granted asylum and those who don’t should be immediately returned to their home country.

Cruz’s measure is very different from California’s Sen. Diane Feinstein’s “Keep Families Together Act,” which would bar law-enforcement officials from detaining migrants who bring children northwards. The draft bill says:

An agent or officer of a designated agency shall be prohibited from removing a child from his or her parent or legal guardian, at or near the port of entry or within 100 miles of the border of the United States …

Federal officials would be unable to detain migrants because the current law bars them from detaining children.

So far, all 49 Democratic Senators have co-sponsored the Feinstein bill, which would allow millions of young men and women easy access to the U.S. job market, providing they also bring a child. Many of the manual jobs they seek would provide cheap services to upper-income Americans, such as D.C. professionals. Those services include bussing restaurant tables, dry-cleaning clothes, mowing lawns, and cleaning wine glasses.
Most of the migrants will work long hours at wages far lower than those needed by blue-collar Americans, partly because many of the migrants are in bondage debt to the violent cartels who let them pass through their border territory. Nationwide, roughly 8 million illegals immigrants -plus roughly 400,000 Central Americans who have filed for asylum — are already helping to hold down blue-collar wages.

The Feinstein legislation would likely shut down the centers created by the border agencies to shelter children while their parents go through the court system. Those shelters have been likely to Nazi concentration camps by many progressive, but appear markedly different:

Cruz’s fix may be welcomed by Laura Bush, Gov. Jeb Bush and other Republicans who demanded that something be done.

Few of the GOP leaders have described what they want to be done.

“In 2018, can we not as a nation find a kinder, more compassionate and more moral answer to this current crisis?” Laura Bush wrote in a Washington Post op-ed. “I, for one, believe we can.”

In contrast, Democrats are demanding that federal officials not be allowed to detain migrants who bring children with them. Their pending law would bar officials from applying federal immigration laws if they are hoping to deter migrants from breaking the law:
An agency may not remove a child from a parent or legal guardian solely for the policy goal of deterring individuals from migrating to the United States or for the policy goal of promoting compliance with civil immigration laws.

Democrats are likely to oppose the fix offered by Cruz, who said that “we can end this crisis by passing the legislation I am introducing this week.”

We are being told again, now by Texas Senator Ted Cruz and others, that American citizens need to fund more detention space for illegal aliens. If we are sending people out why do we need more detention beds and centers. It means we are allowing more people in as the numbers are exploding, asylum claims are ballooning.

Foreign citizens, illegally here, unaccompanied children and families must be in climate controlled shelters with nourishing food and treats and clean bedding and clothes and warm showers and toys and outside recreation and field trips and education and mental, dental, and physical care.

It costs 35, 000.00 a year to care for each illegal alien. American citizens, including the innocent, awaiting trial, judicial procedures, the incarcerated, do not get the special treatment or high standards that illegal aliens do. Seniors and lower income often suffer without heat and air, they go without food at times, proper medical and physical care. American children in certain areas should be the focus of citizen taxpayer dollars before foreign citizens illegally here.

The Pope, George Soros, corporations and the open borders cabal need to fund their social justice in other nations. America is breaking.

Speaker Paul Ryan wants to cut entitlements but he demands taxpayers to fund and accept amnesty, to secure the lives of millions of illegal aliens and give them the jobs that should be held by American citizens.

Why apply and pay and submit to scrutiny for years to come here legally when the benefits are wide open if you come illegally. They are the favored people and our Congress is ignoring our demands for secure borders and stopping illegal immigration theft.

We not want them but unfortunately the situation dictates we need them. The wild thing here is the last budget bill Trump signed cut detention centers. Hmm, go figure.

Not having enough detention facilities leaves catch & release as an option that none of us want.

We don't want to detain them, we want to kick them out. What is up with you? Why are you supporting letting these people in and costing US billions of dollars in care only to ultimately have them released roaming free in our country for years? We already have a 10 year backlog in Sessions Deportation Orders group at DOJ.

What's wrong with me, did you really just say that? Hmm, are you implying that you support catch & release? You're contradicting yourself. There is absolutely nothing you can say or do that is going to change the situation we're in overnight. We need those detention facilities. Immediately kicking back those that cross the border illegally without processing and/or prosecuting does't work. Years of operating in that manner proves that beyond any doubt. They just find another crossing point along the border and come back. That's why we have a problem with so many illegals and reentries. The illegals must be made to realize their are consequences for breaking our laws. The messaging has to be changed and that is what the "zero tolerance" policy intends on changing.

Your narrative is completely wrong (IMO). We need enough facilities so we don't have to play the catch & release game. Under law we have no choice concerning the acceptance of asylum claims. Those folks that pass the initial screening by DHS have to be held somewhere until their case can be adjudicated by an immigration judge. The only other option is catch & release, which is what we don't want. The same goes for the illegal caught in our interior, they have to be held pending adjudication of their case if they choose to fight deportation.

Trump should have never signed the last funding bill that actually reduced funding for the detention centers. He was just so tickled to get his military funding that the immigration issue became less of a priority. He made a choice and surrendered on immigration so he could get his highly prized military funding.

The law is the law and if we're not happy about it, it's our job to effect change through our U.S. Congress (yep, we see how that's worked out for us). Some of your comments are nonsensical because they are contrary to current law.
