DMV sets new standards for immigrants' driver's licenses

Waterbury (AP) _ The state Department of Motor Vehicles is imposing tougher standards when checking applications for driver's licenses for immigrants who claim they are in Connecticut for education.
DMV officials say the stricter rules stem from a department review that uncovered more than 400 abuses of that claim. That means applications that indicate a person wants to change his or her immigration status from visitor to student will undergo a special review. The agency issues more than 25,000 license yearly to non-citizens.
A DMV investigation over the last few months found that a Stratford-based driving school forged documents for immigrants falsely claiming a change in that status. The department has since revoked the operating license of that school and referred the matter to state police.
DMV Commissioner Robert Ward said Monday that state investigators have not found evidence of DMV employees involvement in this matter.
