CT: Rell vetoes tuition break for illegals

Rell vetoes tuition break for illegals
    A New Haven Register editorial

For all the right reasons, Gov. M. Jodi Rell vetoed legislation that would have given a tuition break to illegal immigrants at state colleges and universities.
The legislation would encourage more illegal immigrants to break the law by living here. The bill offered no assurance that the illegal immigrants would ever have legitimate residency in the United States. Getting a break with the in-state tuition would do nothing to change their legal status or their risk of deportation.

Rell noted the provision of the bill that required students to file an application for legal immigration status would, by notifying the government of their presence, greatly increase their chances of being deported.

Rell could have added in her veto message that tuition help for legal residents should be the state's first priority.

    Good for Governor Rell.
