Just four days after Republicans launched Spanish-language radio ads accusing Democrats of blocking immigration reform, the Democrats went on the offensive.
On Friday, the Democratic National Committee launched its own radio advertising campaign to assure listeners that they support a path to citizenship for immigrants who obey the law and pay taxes. The ads attempt to shift the blame back to the Republicans.
"They control Congress and the White House, and in five years have done nothing. They've failed," the ads say in part. "If they wanted comprehensive immigration reform and to protect our borders, they would have done it already."
The ads also note that it is Republicans who want to make criminals out of people who live in the country illegally, as well as those who assist them.
Luis Miranda, a spokesman for the Democratic National Committee, said even though the campaign was planned before the Republicans aired their ads, the group wants to set the record straight. Like the Republicans, the Democrats also will run their ads in Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico.
In Tucson, the 60-second spots will air through Tuesday on La Caliente KCMT (102.1-FM), said Terri Bakos, the station's national sales coordinator. The station also aired the Republican ads.
Tucker Bounds, spokesman for the Republican National Committee, said the Democrats' ad campaign "is just another example that Democrats are committed to misleading Americans and manipulating the immigration issue for political gain."
