Denver Pastors Call For Tom Tancredo's Resignation

    Terry Jessup
    Reporting

(CBS4) DENVER A group of Denver area ministers has called for Congressman Tom Tancredo to resign. The pastors are outraged at the Republican's attendance at a South Carolina rally they claim was associated with a hate group.

Last weekend, Congressman Tancredo gave a speech at a barbecue and rally held at the South Carolina State Museum.

The podium where he spoke has confederate flags behind it, and before he left, he took part in the singing of the southern anthem "Dixie," which has infuriated the Denver Ministerial Alliance.

"The fact that he was there, singing 'Dixie' with other people, that in itself is ridiculous," said Bishop Acen Phillips with the New Birth Baptist Church.

"For a United States congressperson to attend this function and not to be concerned about the confederate flag on the same stage is a disgrace," said Rev. Paul Burleson with the Greater Denver Metro Ministerial Alliance.

A whole roomful of ministers called on Tancredo to apologize and some even want him to resign.

In a phone interview from his Washington office, Tancredo said the event was not sponsored by hate groups and he gave the same immigration reform speech he always gives.

"I gave it in probably five or six different venues, this was just one, all of them were open to the public," Tancredo said. "I don't check people at the door for their private thoughts."

CBS4's Terry Jessup: "If they say, and they did say, if he didn't know who was at that assembly or rally, he should've known, you say what?"

Tancredo: "It was open to the public."

"I think he knew exactly what he was doing, when he was doing it, where he was doing it, and even worse, why he was doing it," said Pastor Patrick Demmer with the Greater Denver Metro Ministerial Alliance.

The ministers said the Republican congressman has become an embarrassment.

Tancredo said they're trying to make politics over an issue that he doesn't see.

The song "Dixie" means different things to people, but is the anthem of some white supremacist groups. Tancredo said there's nothing wrong with anyone singing it "if the spirit moves you, I guess."

Tancredo said there was nothing racist in nature or tone in his speech and has no intention of apologizing for anything.

We all know Tancredo has a lot of enemies. A so-called group of ministers??? Wouldn't worry about it.

    I found a little info.

    http://www.nathannewman.org/laborblog/a ... 3667.shtml
    In Denver:

"The most prominent local black organization, the Greater Metropolitan Denver Ministerial Alliance, attended Saturday's rally. On Monday, the Rev. Patrick Demmer, a member of the alliance, donned toy handcuffs with about 100 ministers from around the country during a demonstration in Washington.
"This is a continuation of the civil rights struggle," Demmer said. "If we can offset some of the mean-spirited ideologies of Tancredo, I'm happy to be here to offset it."

    In Boston

Cardinal O’Malley and Rev. Hurmon Hamilton, executive board member of the Black Ministerial Alliance of Greater Boston joined nearly 8,000 immigrants in their demonstration for amnesty and more benefits at Copley Square yesterday...Rev. Hamilton commented earlier on his role at the rally saying: “Nationally the question has been raised, where is the black church? In Boston, the answer is clear. On Monday evening, we will be standing with our brothers and sisters fighting for responsible immigration reform.”

Not much on Acen Phillips except this.

    Well this is cute!

Mr Phillips and Mr Burleson. You want to make this about race? That is YOUR problem. All I can say is pick a side!

What's wrong with a Confederate Flag in South Carolina? It used to fly at their state Capitol didn't it?

Welcome to the United States, Denver Ministers!!

You need get out of more often.

I'm not from the South, but when I was in the Midwest, people from Alabama who were building a nuclear power plant had Confederate Beach Towels, Flags, and at EVERY get together towards the end of the evening....they would sing Dixie and get their pistols and shoot them straight up in the air.

And I can tell you for an absolute fact, it had nothing, absolutely NOTHING to do with white supremacy. These were some of the nicest sweetest most inclusive welcoming people I'd ever known. They didn't know a stranger. If they had a party, they invited EVERYBODY.

Singing Dixie was like a Tradition for them. Hey!! Maybe it's part of American Culture, Ministers. Ever think of that? Maybe you've had your nose in Mexico's culture and Mexico's flag-hailing so long you failed to learn the many American Traditions that are part of our diverse American Culture, eh?

    Heh.

    What a bunch of bunk.

You want to do something for CIVIL RIGHTS in the United States? Demand your government secure our borders and enforce US Immigration Law because Ministers....illegal aliens are walking all over your people undercutting their wages; stealing their educational system; and robbing the nation of services, assistance and opportunities that would have otherwise gone to American Minority Groups as part of our civil rights laws.

These people have no idea what they're talking about. I'm a transplanted yankee living in North Carolina and I have no problem with Confederate battle flags or singing dixie, it's a part of the culture here and is everywhere you go.

As Congressman Tancredo said, there are powerful forces aligned against him and us.

A little history on the song Dixie:

    Daniel Decatur Emmett
    born , Oct. 29, 1815, Mount Vernon, Ohio, U.S.
died June 28, 1904, Mount Vernon

U.S. composer of “Dixie” (q.v.) and organizer of one of the first minstrel show troupes. The son of a blacksmith, he joined the army at age 17 as a fifer. After his discharge in 1835 he played the drum in travelling circus bands. He was also a capable violinist, flutist, and singer. In 1843 in New York City he and three co-performers organized the Virginia Minstrels, a troupe that competes with the Christy Minstrels for recognition as the earliest minstrel show troupe. In 1858 Emmett joined the Bryant Minstrels.

His song “Dixie,” written in 1859, was originally a “walk-around,” or concluding number for a minstrel show. It attained national popularity and was later the unofficial national anthem of the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War (1861–65) and the South thereafter. Several sets of words, Northern and Southern, were written for the song, but it survives in its version with Emmett's words. Emmett retired in 1888 but subsequently toured in 1895 with A.G. Field's minstrel troupe.

So another race baiting, money grubbing so called man of the cloth attacks Tom Tancredo for daring to stand up for America. So it's ok for Mexicans who are illegal to march into our streets, carrying foreign flags and desecrating American flags, but how dare you get anywhere near a confederate flag and sing dixie. I mean that is just so evil of Tom to do such a thing.

BTW for all you fake ministers out there. Read the bible and tell me again what God thinks about illegal alien invaders. Seriously, could you people actually take the time to read the bible.

    Kudos to Rockfish:

Hey pastors--either pay taxes or BUTT OUT
Short and sweet, and says it all.
Maybe the pastors should be praying instead of doing press releases and news conferences.
