Deportation protest marchers coming to Cicero, Berwyn April 7

CICERO - Cermak Road sidewalks in Cicero may be a little busy April 7 when marchers make their way from Chicago to the U.S. Immigration and Customs detention facility in Broadview to protest the Obama Administration's policy of deportation.

Artemio Arreola, political director for the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, said the marchers, which he estimates to be about 100 people, will reach Cicero sometime between 4 and 5 p.m. They will then stop for dinner at the Inglesia Unita de Cristo Church, 1241 S. Oak Park Ave., Berwyn, before continuing to the Detention Center, 1930 Beach St., Broadview.

Arreola addressed the Cicero Town Board when it met March 25 to seek a marching permit where he was informed that his request had not come in time for the board to follow the proper channels.

Arreola said while he he didn't actually need a permit to walk through town, but he wanted to get one as a sign of good faith to the community.

The march, he added, was to protest the Obama Administration's deportation of two million illegal aliens since he won the election in 2009.

"When he campaigned, both he and the Republicans said the system was broken," Areola said. "The politicians around the country agreed the system is broken. At the end of the day they haven't done anything."

The big issue is the children, who are born in the U.S., and can be left behind when their parents are deported, he said.
