NC: Missouri Grandfather killed by Illegal in Apex Collison

APEX (WTVD) -- A 20-year-old woman from Angier is facing charges in a crash that killed one person in Apex Sunday afternoon.

Carla Romero was taken to jail overnight after being released from the hospital. She faced a magistrate Monday morning -- charged with involuntary manslaughter and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Authorities say they received a call just after 3 p.m. about a crash on Holly Springs Road near the YMCA. According to the Highway Patrol, Romero was driving a Cadillac SRX when she lost control and slammed head-on into a vehicle carrying Donald Reynard and three passengers.

Reynard, 73, of Missouri was killed. He was in town for the christening of one of his grandchildren.

His wife, 72-year-old Ann Reynard, is in critical condition. His 35-year-old daughter-in-law Kenia Reynard, of Fuquay-Varina, along with a 16-year-old in the car also was injured.

Two teens were passengers in Romero's vehicle and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A man at the scene told ABC11 Eyewitness News his nieces were in the SUV and had just left church, headed to eat when they crashed.

According to the Highway Patrol, the SUV was traveling 80 mph in a 45 mph zone when Romero lost control. The SUV hit a dip in the road and went airborne. The impact left an engine from one of the vehicles a hundred feet from the scene of the crash.

Jena Baker, who lives near the crash site, says people in the area have anticipated something like this happening.

"I have seen people hit that dip going fast in small cars and they just literally go airborne, and it is just frightening," Baker explained.

Romero's first court appearance is scheduled for Monday afternoon. She's being held on a $1 million bond.

Investigators have not said if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

A separate investigation into Romero's immigration status also is underway.

    APEX, N.C. -

A Harnett County woman is in jail for her alleged role in a deadly accident on Holly Springs Road in Apex Sunday afternoon.

According to the State Highway Patrol, Carla Romero, 20, was driving at about 80 miles per hour, about 35 miles above the speed limit. Troopers say she hit a dip in the road near Winding Oak Way and crossed the center line into the path of an oncoming car.

The driver of the other car, 73-year-old Donald Reynard of Missouri, was killed. His three passengers were all taken to WakeMed.

Romero has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. She could spend more than 25 years in prison if convicted.

Romero's bond is set at $1 million. A judge refused to lower it Monday, especially since the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a hold on her, which means she may be in the country illegally.

Romero's attorney argued in court Monday afternoon that a mechanical malfunction caused the accident.

Her next court date is on November 1.

    Man killed in Apex collision

Carla Romero, 20, appears before a District Court judge Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, on charges of involuntary manslaughter and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Apex, N.C. — A 73-year-old driver died in Apex Sunday afternoon when another driver lost control and hit his car head-on.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol charged Carla Romero, 20, of Angier, with involuntary manslaughter and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

Investigators said Romero was driving at about 80 mph in a 45 mph speed zone when she hit a car driven by Donald Carl Reynard on Holly Springs Road at Winding Oak Way.

Reynard, of Bonne Terre, Mo., died at the scene, troopers said.

His wife Anna Reynard, daughter-in-law, Kenia Reynard, and 16-year-old granddaughter, Irma Andrade, were also in the car. They were taken to WakeMed.

Anna Reynard, 72, was in fair condition Monday afternoon; Reynard, 35, was in good condition; and Andrade, 16, was in critical condition.

Romero and two passengers from her Cadillac SUV, one of them a child, were also hospitalized, troopers said. Their conditions were not available Monday.

Romero was being held under a $1 million bond at the Wake County jail Monday afternoon.

During her first court appearance Monday afternoon, her attorney told a District Court judge that Romero’s SUV had a mechanical failure.

Authorities said the Reynards were in North Carolina for their grandson’s baptism.

Immigration authorities said they believe Romero is in the country illegally.

    Cadillac SRX

"Romero was driving a Cadillac SRX " I've seen many illegals with the old lone star card (foodstamps) and a nice expensive truck/ SUV at the grocery store.

How do I know they are illegal? I use to work at the welfare office!

Angier is right down the road from where I live. All the illegals surrounding us have the biggest baddest LOUDEST SUV's. I blame Bev Perdue and Sleasley before her for making NC so "hospitable" for these invaders! Speed limit? Hell, that's only a "suggested rate of speed" for these jerks!

Many Americans can not afford those Cadillac SUV's

Bev Perdue helped a lot of this to happen. Seems the illegals are the ones with the jobs in N CArolina
