Latino group asks for injunction to stop illegal immigration law

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - In an anticipated move, a Latino group has asked a federal judge to stop Oklahoma's strict anti-illegal immigration law from taking effect on November 1st.

The National Coalition of Latino Clergy on Monday filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Tulsa against Governor Brad Henry and Attorney General Drew Edmondson, challenging the constitutionality of the law.

After business hours Thursday, the group filed an emergency motion for a preliminary injunction, saying the lawsuit's plaintiffs would suffer irreparable injury unless the injunction is issued before November 1st.

The motion asks for a hearing as soon as possible.

The co-authors of the law known as House Bill 1804 are state Representative Randy Terrill of Moore and state Senator Jim Williamson of Tulsa.

Both have said they are confident the law, dubbed the "Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act," will be able to withstand any legal challenge.
