Invader support group files injunction against Oklahoma

Latino group asks for injunction to stop illegal immigration law

    Associated Press - October 20, 2007 1:15 AM ET

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - In an anticipated move, a Latino group has asked a federal judge to stop Oklahoma's strict anti-illegal immigration law from taking effect on November 1st.

The National Coalition of Latino Clergy on Monday filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Tulsa against Governor Brad Henry and Attorney General Drew Edmondson, challenging the constitutionality of the law.

After business hours Thursday, the group filed an emergency motion for a preliminary injunction, saying the lawsuit's plaintiffs would suffer irreparable injury unless the injunction is issued before November 1st.

The motion asks for a hearing as soon as possible.

The co-authors of the law known as House Bill 1804 are state Representative Randy Terrill of Moore and state Senator Jim Williamson of Tulsa.

Both have said they are confident the law, dubbed the "Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act," will be able to withstand any legal challenge.

For any "Latino Clergy" I can recommend a whole host of other projects they can participate in and not break any US laws either:

    Yes (!) Captainron.

The one question that goes begging is...

"But does the church stand to gain financially in the long-term as a result of any such activity.?"

This is an issue I would like to see researched or polled. My personal observation is that the Catholic Church, in particular, is alienating their base. I am not an economist (That is such an understatement, it is laughable.) but it seems risky to lose parishioners who have supported the church all their lives in exchange for illegal immigrants who are often transient and at risk of being deported.

The feeling of Catholics is much like that of legal American Citizens. It feels like we are being thrown under the bus for a group that is usurping the assets of the church that were built by life-long parishioners. The churches are losing their multi-national culture in favor of a decidedly Hispanic culture.

We have always had a large number of Hispanic immigrants in our church because Hispanics are primarily Catholic. But they assimilated; they came to Masses that are said in English, they came to church functions with the entire church family. At covered dish suppers they treated us to their wonderful Mexican cuisine while they savored our southern fried chicken and blackberry cobbler. We were truly one family of many colors.

The difference is that the Hispanics along with many other races trickled in at the rate of 20-30 per year. They were welcomed and celebrated and they did their part to become one of our community.

Now we have a Mass that is said in Spanish and there will probably be a 2nd one added soon. They have Hispanic ceremonies that have not been a part of our church program and that we don't understand. They have their traditional celebrations in our church hall. They take up their own collection that is used to support only their Mass.

If the Hispanics continue to populate our small church at the current rate, and the 'old' parishioners continue to leave at the same rate, Hispanics will be the majority in a couple of years. We now feel like we, although American born, are in search of a hospitable country.

Judging by the way they reproduce they will BE the Church in a few more years!
