Petitioners cite 200-year-old Spanish land grants

GRANJENO - Granjeno residents are trying to use an international law, dating back to the 1700s, to stop the border wall from being built in their city.

The city was established around the late 1700s and early 1800s. Spain awarded citizens with land grants and landowners had to follow Spanish law.

Residents say they are still governed by those laws. They claim their property is their own and the federal government can't touch it.

Dozens of people are petitioning the federal government with this argument.
