DHS vows criminal charges as illegal immigrant caravan reaches U.S.

By Stephen Dinan - The Washington Times - Wednesday, April 25, 2018

As the illegal immigrant caravan arrives at the U.S. border, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen renewed her promise Wednesday night to prosecute as many of them as possible once they attempt to enter the country.

Ms. Nielsen also said those presenting false asylum claims — and even those who attempt to coach the migrants on how to make bogus claims — could face prosecution.

And she told those with valid asylum claims they should be making them in Mexico, where they are now, rather than skipping straight to the U.S., since Mexico is deemed a safe county where they can find relief from whatever they’re fleeing at home.

The caravan, which organizers say is now about 600 Central Americans out of perhaps 1,500 who started off on the journey, has turned into a major test of the Trump administration’s willpower, versus immigrant-rights activists ability to use U.S. law against the administration.

It’s also giving Ms. Nielsen and Attorney General Jeff Sessions a chance to show they’ve taken to heart President Trump’s admonitions about stopping illegal immigration.

“The smugglers, traffickers, and criminals understand our legal loopholes better than Congress and are effectively exploiting them to their advantage,” Ms. Neilsen said Wednesday. “This president fully understands the threat this poses to Americans and has been crystal clear since the beginning of his administration that we will protect our borders and our sovereignty.”

Ms. Nielsen is slated to testify to Congress Thursday morning, where the caravan is also likely to be a hot topic.

The Central Americans argue they’re refugees fleeing rough conditions back home — particularly in Honduras, which is suffering political unrest.

They argue they deserve asylum in the U.S.

The caravan first mustered in southern Mexico in late March and has been making its way north since. Mexican officials did intervene, saying they deported at least 400 of the caravan’s members and promising to offer asylum to others who earned it.

But many in the caravan said they were determined to make the U.S. to get better jobs or unite with family already here.

That’s the case for Manuel Enrique, a 34-year-old from El Salvador who has been previously deported but is determined to get back to the U.S. where he says his children live — including two with autism. Pueblo Sin Fronteras, a caravan organizer, said Mr. Enrique will claim gangs have made it “impossible for him to live in El Salvador after being deported.”

But they also said his chief goal is to get back to his children.

“He doesn’t want his children growing up without a father and he wants to make sure they can come to him for support, friendship, and guidance,” the organization said.

That’s the sort of claim that’s going to test U.S. law.

To win asylum, someone is supposed to prove persecution back home because of race, religion or membership in some other protected class. Overall violent conditions aren’t supposed to be enough to qualify.

Complicating matters is the fact that lodging an asylum claim is relatively easy, and because of long backlogs in the immigration courts it usually means someone can remain here for years while their claim gets sorted out. That serves as an incentive to illegal immigrants to make the attempt no matter what, hoping to disappear into the shadows, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told Congress earlier Wednesday.

But Pueblo Sin Fronteras insisted the caravan’s participants have valid claims, and said it’s counting on Homeland Security “to respect the international treaties regarding asylum.”

The group has asked supporters to be on hand later this week when caravan members plan en masse to test the border in San Diego and make their asylum requests.

“With enough support, eyes, and solidarity on both sides of the border we can ensure that the caravan members’ human rights are respected, and that they are not retaliated against for exercising their rights publicly,” the group said.

Just close the border to all asylum seekers and refugees until further notice. Don't waste your time or our money on them.

Premeditated, planned, bought and paid for invasion of our country.

Do not let any of them in!

Mexico is not our friend, never was.

They provided the 21 day visa's to pass through and the buses to get them here.

Now shut down ALL border traffic down to one lane and put the screws to Mexico.

15% tax on all remittances out of the country and build the WALL.

Notice how all of the excuses we read from these illegal immigrants do not meet our legal qualifications for asylum. This whole thing is a fraud to take advantage of America and Americans.

Their overbreeding and poverty is NOT a case for asylum. This program needs to be terminated!

We have gangs, drugs, murder, rape, violence, corruption, kidnapping, serial killers, all of it!

FINGERPRINT, PHOTOGRAPH, PROCESS AND PUT THEM ON A BUS RIGHT BACK OVER THE BORDER!

ANOTHER COUNTRY CANNOT JUST LOAD UP THOUSANDS OF THEIR CITIZENS AND DUMP THEIR PEOPLE ON OUR SOIL.

I wonder who is picking up the tab for his kids? Foreign aid (USAID) to El Salvador should be halted and all remittances should be stopped from the US. Just stopping the remittance flow would stop a lot of the illegals from coming here to scam. It looks like South American countries want their piece of the pie in remittance income like their neighbor Mexico is receiving. I believe that remittances have surpassed oil income in Mexico....

Caravan of migrants has reached the border, braces to cross despite Trump's warnings

Attorneys warned asylum seekers to expect the worst, including possible separation from children and family members and months of detention.

    by Dennis Romero / Apr.28.2018 / 6:50 PM ET

A U.S. volunteer lawyer informs migrants on what to expect when requesting asylum in the U.S., at an office in Tijuana, Mexico on April 27, 2018. Close to 200 migrants from Central America, mostly from Honduras, arrived in Tijuana seeking to enter the United States.

Members of a migrant caravan have reached Tijuana, Mexico, where they were preparing for a Sunday showdown with American immigration officials. The administration of President Donald Trump has described the group as a threat, and Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the caravan as "a deliberate attempt to undermine our laws and overwhelm our system."
Nearly 20 attorneys from the United States were in the border city dispensing advice to the migrants as a healthy slice of the nearly 400 people who ventured north through Mexico from Central America planned to ask for asylum Sunday, according to Pueblo Sin Fronteras' Gina Garibo, who has been helping to guide the caravan.

The attorneys were warning asylum seekers to expect the worst, including possible separation from children and family members and months of detention as their cases are weighed.
"We are the bearers of horrible news," Los Angeles lawyer Nora Phillips said. "That's what good attorneys are for."
Earlier this month, Trump tweeted that the caravan "better be stopped before it gets there" to the border. He blamed Congress for what he described as "weak" immigration laws that encourage such migration.

The official stance of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is that the asylum seekers, who began their trek March 25 near the Guatemalan border, should have tried to settle in Mexico. But Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said their claims at the U.S.-Mexico border would be expedited "efficiently and expeditiously."
At the same time she warned that anyone who helps an undocumented immigrant make false claims of asylum could be prosecuted.
North of the border a group of nearly 20 pro-migrant demonstrators has been marching south from Los Angeles to the border since April 22 and reached San Diego's Chicano Park Saturday.

Martin Pineda, an organizer for the L.A. nonprofit Central American Resource Center (CARECEN), said participants planned to meet members of the caravan face-to-face Sunday at San Diego's Friendship Park, the only officially designated place along the U.S.-Mexico border where such cross-border encounters are sanctioned.
Members of this March Without Borders contingent suffered only a brief egging Thursday by Trump supporters in Encinitas, California, and some blistered feet, he said.

The trek south of the border was much more dangerous and taxing. A migrant who gave her name as Katerine sat in Tijuana with her baby girl, Ashley, on her lap. She told NBC News' Gadi Schwartz she wants to get to North Carolina.
She said the pair went days without food and water and used the infamous freight train known as "the beast" to get part of the way through Mexico. "We've had exactly a month without sleeping in a bed," she said.

Believe obama changed the laws again to suit his purposes on asylum reasons. He also decreed the central american UACs aka ms-13 drug dealing gang members, receive $1500 a month, a smart phone plus a bus ride to wherever they wanted to go inside the US. Our border patrol escorted them. He did whatever he wanted to and it was never in favor of American citizens.

The greedy beholden to industry/contributions politicians let him get away with writing his decrees again & again because of the cheap labor bonanza.

"I have my pen". Does trump have a pen? think he does, maybe he should use it instead of trying to make obama's unlawful decrees permanent like DACA or push for immigration reform aka amnesty - sure amnesty the drug cartels is what that would do..

Send the WHOLE family back...all of them

They left 2500 miles of their garbage, human waste, dirty diapers, dirty clothes and food wrappers the entire way. No respect for Mexico and NO respect for the USA. They trashed every town they passed through with their filth and garbage.

Mexico is facilitating this to GIT RID OF THEM as quickly as possible.

Mexico GAVE them the 20 day passes to visit Mexico and they can KEEP them!

Load them up on a bus BACK to Central America...no sleep in a bed for another 2 weeks!

They have been coached on what to say and what NOT to say.

Their overbreeding and poverty is NOT our responsibility. Go get your human rights on your soil.

We give these countries BILLIONS of our money for decades...we do NOT want THEIR citizens!

SEND THEM BACK AND CUT OFF EVERY DIME OF OUR MONEY TO MEXICO AND CENTRAL AMERICA

NO MORE EXPOLITING OUR GENEROUSITY OR OUR COUNTRY!
