Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is sending the wrong message about her commitment to law enforcement.

An agency official says Ms. Napolitano is "not happy" about a federal raid at a Washington state machine shop that netted 28 suspected illegal aliens.

"(T)his is not her policy," the official added.

Well, it damn well better be.

A White House spokesman contends such raids aren't a long-term solution to our illegal alien problem and that the real answer is to begin an immigration-reform debate this year.

Excuse us, but America had an immigration reform debate in 2007. The proponents of amnesty for illegals, and the creation of a "pathway to citizenship," lost when Congress rejected President Bush's immigration bill.

The long-term solution for lawbreaking is law enforcement.

During the presidential campaign, Barack Obama called work-site raids "ineffective" and said he would focus on employers who hire illegals. But every lawbreaker, employee or employer, should be treated equally.

Turning what's essentially a blind eye to the illegals invasion is a dereliction of duty.
