Former Oakland DMV Workers Sentenced To Federal Prison

OAKLAND -- A former Department of Motor Vehicles worker and an accomplice who used stolen Social Security numbers to issue driver's licenses to hundreds of illegal immigrants were sentenced to federal prison, authorities said.

Frances Aliganga, 53, a former DMV licensing and registration examiner, was sentenced Monday to three years and two months in prison after pleading guilty to mail fraud and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.

Her accomplice, Veronica Rivera, 54, a so-called identification "broker," was sentenced to two years in prison for conspiracy to commit mail fraud. She recruited immigrants, provided stolen Social Security numbers and steered them to Aliganga to process their applications.

Aliganga issued licenses between November 2003 and June 2005 to people who had not taken written or driving tests, prosecutors said.

Aliganga and Rivera were among 10 people, including five DMV workers and five identification brokers, charged in the case.

Two of the former DMV workers and one broker have pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing. The others have pleaded not guilty

Just a few people from one office in one state that have been caught, I have got to wonder how many more are still at it?

And why isn't DMV ever so willing to assist the rest of us?!!

Do they register people to vote at the DMV in CA like they do in Colorado?

I do not know.
I know they once talked about it, but it seemed like a bad idea to me, they have enough problems doing their own jobs. - Ever been to a DMV in California? I try not to.

For some reason beyond me they started asking to see your Social Security card when applying for a new or renewed license.
I have always understood that SS cards were not allowed to be used for identification purposes, but then why should they let a federal law stand in the way?
