U.S. senator continues meetings with N.C. law enforcement

Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C., will continue meeting with sheriffs around the state this week, talking about how to determine whether criminal suspects are illegal immigrants and how to ease their path out of the country.

Four N.C. counties are participating in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement program known in Washington parlance as 287(g). The counties are Mecklenburg, Gaston, Cabarrus and Alamance.

"We are trying to weed out the criminal element of illegal aliens," Dole said. "I really believe it's possible for North Carolina to become a model where we are trying to cut through red tape and address a serious need."

ICE spokesman Michael Gilhooly said the local law enforcement officials who go through training get access to immigration databases to check on people being charged with other crimes.

Once they figure out who is not authorized to be in the country, local officers can tag the suspects with immigration violations they'll have to contend with after or simultaneously with other violations.

About 22,000 illegal aliens have been identified and charged in the past two years, Gilhooly said.

ICE officials plan to join Dole Friday at a meeting with sheriffs in Greensboro.

Dole said she opposed the immigration bill before Congress earlier this year, "but I want to be for things that can make a difference right now."

Hello! Fingerprint recognition technology!!! We already use it, just computerizing it would make verification virtually simultaneous. I'm not the brightest candle burning and I can figure that out so why can't the best and the brightest that are supposed to be representing us. To take it a step further...officials (law enforcement and so forth) could even use bluetooth technology and carry a hand held reader to identify people in question in a traffic stop. It would be no different than calling in a driver's license or license plate!

    Dole meets with Triad sheriffs
    08/31/2007 05:53 PM
    By: Bob Costner

Sen. Elizabeth Dole GREENSBORO -- North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole has held several meetings with sheriffs around the state the past few weeks to discuss the problem of crime and illegal immigrants. "And do everything we can to help our sheriffs who are out on the front lines," said Dole.

A handful of Triad-area sheriffs were involved in the latest meeting in Greensboro. They estimate in some cases up to 40 percent of their crime involves illegal immigrants.

"Everything from prostitution, drugs, trespass, driving while impaired," said Guilford Sheriff B.J. Barnes, "the whole gamut of crimes we have out there, and they're committing a lot of them."

Authorities say it can be difficult to identify illegal immigrants, and difficult to move them through the judicial system and then there's the issue of jail overcrowding.

"It's already stuffed," said Barnes of the jails.

Several federal initiatives were discussed that could help, including one called 287 G, that would allow deputies to share and access more information to identify illegals and begin deportation proceedings.

Alamance County has done that with 245 illegal immigrants charged with crimes since the program started in June. "That has made a significant impact," said Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson, "and has also made Alamance County a much safer place."

The sheriffs say they're considering a regional partnership on the program and other approaches to dealing with the problem.

Dole says that's an important part of homeland security, and addressing the issue of illegal immigration "If you want to feel safe and secure in your homes, this part of it needs to be done," she said, "because nothing else really matters, does it, if you can't feel secure."

Sheriff Terry Johnson of Alamance County has made an impact since starting the program under 287 (g). I met with an officer that covers Alamance county for a state agency. He had a Felony warrant for an illegal immigrant in Burlington. While trying to locate him, he found that he left Alamance County because he knew the warrant was coming, and he did not want to be put in the Alamance County jail. Why ? He knew he would be deported. Where do we think he went ? The safe haven of Forsyth County !!!!!!!

    KUDOOS !!! Sheriff Johnson

Great news locallaw4u...except for Forsyth County. Either Schatzman (Forsyth County sheriff) gets on the train, because it has left the station, or he stands by and gets run over. The people have spoken and they want 287(g).
