Dozens arrested in raid at Tropicana Field

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 31 cleaning-crew members from Knight FM at Tropicana Field Wednesday.

The raid in search of illegal aliens at the Tampa Bay Devil Rays' home stadium came after ICE received a tip about the potential law violations there, Pamela McCullough, public affairs officer of ICE's Tampa office, said.

Twenty-five of the workers were prosecuted in state court in Pinellas County for possessing and utilizing fraudulent documents. Removal proceedings are under way for the other six, McCullough said.

The workers arrested are predominantly Mexican. Some are Guatemalan.

"The individuals who were arrested were employed by subcontractors working for the stadium cleaning contractor," said Richard L. Vaughn, VP of communications for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. "They are not Devil Rays employees. We have pledged to give the authorities our full cooperation in this matter and will have no further comment."

Knight FM also handles the cleaning services at Raymond James Stadium, a company spokesperson said.

Could all these deportations be a strategic move by Republicans because the mid-term elections are coming up? Perhaps the Republicans want to make it look like they're going to be very hard-lined on the issue of illegal immigration before the voters go to the polls.

As a Republican, I would like to agree with you. However, as an intelligent person, I really don't think to many of the Republican elite have any knowledge that illegal immigration exists. They are too busy trying to save horses and secure the ports of Seattle. (Which I think both are important things, by the way, but...)
