100 lbs of pot, handguns and illegal immigrants caught in raid

BUFFALO, NY (WIVB) — Three Jamaican nationals are facing a host of drug and weapons charges and two of them could be deported once they go through the legal process.
This latest bust comes on the heels of what has been a big week for the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, with hundreds of thousands of dollars in drugs taken off the streets and several people arrested.
Thursday’s pot bust is the result of an investigation that’s lasted for months — and tips from the public.
Authorities raided 42 and 44 Thatcher Ave., in the city. Inside they said they found a room full of pot, guns and a scale that’s normally used to measure weight — in people.
Detectives said that’s a clear indication of just how much marijuana was being dealt from the two homes, which were used mainly as warehouses.
“Big time drug dealers in the city of Buffalo,” said Erie County Detective DJ Granville, who leads the sheriff’s office’s narcotics unit. “They’re at the higher level in the city. One hundreds pounds of weed, we’re talking at least $1,000 a pound.”
The sheriff’s office arrested Nkomo Hepburn, Michelle Palmer and Sanjay Cousins, 25. Police said Hepburn, 25, and Palmer, 41, are suspected of being in this country illegally.
Guns were also recovered, just as weapons were associated with other busts this week.
“Handguns, weapons and drugs, they’re part in parcel. They’re with each other,” Granville said. “These guys protect their drug stash. They’re not only protecting it from us, they’re protecting it from people that like to rob these type of people. And violence goes along with it.”
Many of the county’s recent raids started with anonymous tips, Granville said.
The sheriff’s office urges residents to call the tip line if they see something suspicious. The number is (716) 858-7755. The sheriff’s office also has a free app that accepts anonymous tips as well. Search Erie County Sheriff’s Office in any iPhone or Android app store.
Thursday’s raid was the second of the day for the sheriff’s office. More than 2 lbs of heroin was found at a home on Jefferson Avenue earlier in the day. On Tuesday, authorities found more than 600 bags of heroin and 10 grams of cocaine at a home on Stewart Avenue.
