DREAM Act vote may be political nightmare for Hutchison

WASHINGTON — In a vote that could have steep ramifications for a potential 2012 re-election bid, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison is in a political tug of war over her decision to vote against a bill that would offer citizenship to some children of illegal immigrants.
According to the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan policy group, the legislation would make eligible for citizenship about 2.1 million people brought to this country before age 16 by illegal immigrant parents.
Hutchison, meanwhile, is one of a half-dozen Republican lawmakers targeted by Democrats and Latino and organized labor groups that see her as a swing vote.
