Drug bust in N.C. shows long reach of Mexico’s cartels, likely corruption of U.S. officials

By World Tribune on February 8, 2017

A drug bust in North Carolina show how far the tentacles of Mexico’s drug cartels reach into the United States, a report said.

A heroin ring operated by a Mexican cartel was recently busted in Rowan County, more than 1,500 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, Judicial Watch noted in its Corruption Chronicles blog on Feb. 8.

Rowan County Sheriff’s Office authorities said they began targeting a large scale heroin distribution ring in 2013. The investigation found that a Mexican heroin trafficking ring based in the Charlotte-Matthews area had been supplying heroin to Rowan County for more than 10 years, with some transactions involving quantities of up to $10,000 worth at a time, WXII-12 News reported on Feb. 2.

“In the last few years Judicial Watch has reported extensively on the massive amounts of drugs — especially heroin — that get smuggled into the U.S. by Mexican traffickers who later use street, prison and outlaw motorcycle gangs to distribute them throughout the country,” the Judicial Watch blog said.

“Undoubtedly, these enterprises benefited tremendously from the Obama administration’s open border policies.”

A government assessment disclosed that there are at least eight major Mexican drug trafficking organizations operating in the United States with the Sinaloa Cartel being the most active, the Judicial Watch report said, adding that heroin is the most popular drug and is entering the U.S. through Mexico in record numbers.

A report published late last year referred to western states as a “heroin transit zone” with Mexican cartels moving large amounts of drugs through the Southwest border.

“This is hardly earth-shattering news,” Judicial Watch noted. “A number of federal audits have documented the enormous amounts of drugs that annually enter the U.S. through the porous southern border, even as Obama’s Homeland Security Secretary famously proclaimed the region to be as secure as it’s ever been.”

Federal arrests and prosecutions of heroin traffickers have skyrocketed with 6,353 heroin-related arrests in 2015. The number of individuals sentenced for heroin trafficking offenses in federal courts has increased by almost 50, the government confirms.

More than 50,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2015, the most ever.

A big part of the problem is that the drug trafficking is being leveraged by corrupt public officials in the U.S., a years-long Judicial Watch investigation has found.

“Undoubtedly, cartel violence is real but truckloads of drugs are getting across the country because U.S. officials at the municipal, state and federal level are turning a blind eye or actively participating and cooperating with cartels,” Judicial Watch said.

YES!! YES!! YES!!! No doubt about it. And what's even worse is that these drug cartels are the fuel and fire that drives illegal immigration. It's all about the same thing, illegal aliens running an illegal foreign-controlled drug business.

This is what happens when you run with illegal aliens. You're lining your pockets and doing their bidding, because now you're controlled by the same people they are.

It's clear as a bell why we have an illegal immigration problem in the United States. The drug cartels have bought up so many politicians and yes even law enforcement officers too, that they are now running policy in the United States.

This article is one several example of why legalizing marijuana won't damage the drug cartels. These cartels are well diversified and must be crushed by smart and efficient law enforcement actions. Attempting to undercut them by legalizing a fraction of their business just won't work. Besides that, the damage we would be doing to our children, grandchildren, etc. would never be worth such a trade-off. Nope, legalizing dangerous drugs should never be used as a means to undermine the cartels. I only say this because there are some that think this is the way to go.

I totally disagree, MW. This article shows what the power of an illegal foreign controlled drug business has done to our country. This would not happen under a legal recreational rug system that excludes imports and exports and is run by licensed US citizens.

What is the biggest cash crop in the world?

Marijuana – Marijuana remains the largest cash crop in America despite law enforcement spending an estimated $20 billion annually to pursue efforts to outlaw the plant. Recent studies have shown that marijuana exceeds the combined value of corn ($23.3 billion), wheat ($7.5 billion) and artichokes ($53.7 million).
