A Customs and Border Protection pilot escaped injury when he was fired on by smugglers after a foiled attempt to bring marijuana into the United States Monday night.

At about 11:30 p.m. Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents monitoring Remote Video Surveillance Cameras observed six vehicles cross illegally into the United States from Mexico near Country 15th Street and the Colorado River, the patrol said in a news release.

Border Patrol agents responded to the area as the smugglers were attempting to open a gate at the Salinity Canal Bridge, the release said.

As agents approached, the suspects fled the scene. Four of the vehicles were able to return to Mexico, but two became stuck in the sand. All occupants from these vehicles fled back into Mexico.

A CBP Air and Marine aircraft that responded to assist the agents was shot at from from across the river. The air Interdiction agent piloting the helicopter moved to a safe area and no one was injured. The aircraft did not sustain any damage.

Registration checks on both vehicles abandoned by the smugglers, a 1999 Chevrolet pickup and 2005 Toyota Tundra, revealed that they were reported stolen. A search of the vehicles uncovered 175 bundles of marijuana weighing nearly 2,300 pounds and having an estimated street value of more than $1.8 million. The drugs and vehicle were turned over to Drug Enforcement Administration officials.

Violent encounters between CBP personnel and borderland criminals in the Yuma Sector reached an all-time high over the past year. From Oct. 1, 2006 through Aug. 31, 2007, there were 185 assaults against agents, the patrol said.
