Fatal hit-run suspect nabbed in Ohio

A 27-year-old man who fled the scene of a crash that killed a 17-year-old Port Washington boy in the Town of Lima two weeks ago has been captured in Ohio, according to the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Department.

Eddie Carbajal-Lile, whose last known address is 220 Martin Lane, Apt. 2, in Fredonia, will return to Sheboygan County face a charge of hit and run resulting in death, which carries penalties of up to 15 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Police say Carbajal-Lile ran a stop sign while eastbound on county Highway V about 8:40 p.m. Aug. 14, striking a car on state Highway 32 and killing passenger Paul B. Watry. He had been drinking for several hours prior to the crash and is in the country illegally, according to a criminal complaint.

Capt. Dave Adams of the sheriff's department has said investigators believed Carbajal-Lile — an illegal immigrant — would attempt to flee the country. He was arrested in Butler County in Ohio under the alias of Ricardo Ibanez-Crisanto, but his identity was revealed through a fingerprint check.

It was not immediately clear when Carbajal-Lile would be returned to face charges.
The crash also injured driver Scot Mueller, 18, of Port Washington, passenger Jillian Fitzmaurice, 18, of Oostburg, both in the car with Watry. Watry died Aug. 16 at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Wauwatosa, with the cause of death listed as closed head trauma, the complaint said.

According to the complaint:

Witnesses said Carbajal-Lile walked away from the crash after retrieving his cell phone, and the complaint said he called a friend twice saying he had hit something and didn't feel good. Adams has said blood was found in Carbajal-Lile's car.

That friend told police that he had been drinking with Carbajal-Lile and several other friends from 5:30 p.m. to sometime after 8 p.m. that night at Kim's Five Corners Tavern & Eatery, N3701 Highway I, a little more than two miles from the crash site.

He said Carbajal-Lile had a total of five or six beers.

Another case of vehicular homicide. A secure border and aggressive enforcement of our immigration laws would have prevented this murder.
