Man who killed Avra Valley woman in crash far exceeded legal blood-alcohol limit

A Mexican man who crashed into a van carrying an Avra Valley couple last month, killing a woman, had four and a half times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, toxicology reports show.
Tomas Vasquez Martinez, of Michoacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, was driving a Ford truck, speeding and swerving with the headlights off, when he crossed the center line and crashed into Erin and Thomas Leadbetter’s minivan on Avra Valley Road on March 26, said Sgt. Tim Brunenkant, of the Marana Police Department.
Erin Leadbetter, 56, a reading teacher at DeGrazia Elementary School and a mother of five, was killed. Thomas Leadbetter, 57, who works at the Tucson Police Department, was badly injured.
Martinez, 31, also was killed in the crash. Alcohol containers were found in the road, police said. Toxicology reports show his blood-alcohol level was 0.37 percent. The legal limit in Arizona is 0.08 percent.

Cops: Driver in fatal crash extremely drunk
    By DAVID L. TEIBEL

A man who collided head-on with a minivan in March, killing a woman motorist near Marana, had nearly five times the blood alcohol level needed for legally presumed impairment, Marana police said today.
The man, Tomas Vasquez-Martinez, 31, a general laborer here illegally from Michoacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, was killed, as was minivan driver Erin K. Leadbetter, 56, of North Van Ark Road in Tucson, said Sgt. Tim Brunenkant.
Erin Leadbetter's husband, Thomas Leadbetter, 57, was hospitalized with serious injuries. Brunenkant said Thomas Leadbetter has since been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.
Brunenkant said blood tests done as part of an autopsy showed Martinez had a blood alcohol content of 0.37 percent. A motorist is considered impaired with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent.
Martinez had left a friend's house in Casa Grande about an hour before the 7 p.m. collision on March 26, Brunenkant said, adding friends tried to stop Martinez from driving away, but could not.
Martinez was speeding with his headlights off as he traveled east on West Avra Valley Road near North Sandario Road, Brunnenkant said, adding Martinez crossed the center line and collided with the Leadbetters.
An autopsy showed Erin Leadbetter had no alcohol in her blood, Brunenkant said. Neither driver had any drugs in their systems, Brunenkant said.
