Man who killed Avra Valley woman in crash far exceeded legal blood-alcohol limit

A Mexican man who crashed into a van carrying an Avra Valley couple last month, killing a woman, had four and a half times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood, toxicology reports show.
Tomas Vasquez Martinez, of Michoacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, was driving a Ford truck, speeding and swerving with the headlights off, when he crossed the center line and crashed into Erin and Thomas Leadbetter’s minivan on Avra Valley Road on March 26, said Sgt. Tim Brunenkant, of the Marana Police Department.
Erin Leadbetter, 56, a reading teacher at DeGrazia Elementary School and a mother of five, was killed. Thomas Leadbetter, 57, who works at the Tucson Police Department, was badly injured.
Martinez, 31, also was killed in the crash. Alcohol containers were found in the road, police said. Toxicology reports show his blood-alcohol level was 0.37 percent. The legal limit in Arizona is 0.08 percent.
