E-Verify: Much more than the cost of doing business

E-Verify: Much more than the cost of doing business

by Dawn Lurie and Kevin Lashus
    February 8, 2011 in E-Verify, Guest Blog

In Thursday’s late edition of the Bloomberg news, the group released the findings of a report on a proposal to require every U.S. employer to use E-Verify to confirm the legal status of all new hires (just new hires, mind you).

In summary: “Businesses with fewer than 500 workers bear the greatest burden (of such a proposal), according to the data, spending about $2.6 billion a year to use the government’s web-based verification system, E-Verify, compared with less than $100 million for the 4 percent that used it in 2010.â€

Doesn't look like E-Verify will break the bank.

Someone - perhaps Lamar Smith - needs to tell these folks that if they want to do business in the United States, they'd better make a good faith effort to hire Americans.

Pennies on the dollar compared to the fines they face for hiring an illegal alien. Bet they spent more on their tax accountants in a year. Also, I suspect that's based on the first year costs, which would be for dedicated equipment(unnecessary in most offices) so the second year should be virtually free.

Plus as E-Verify gains steam and support it will become even quicker and more streamlined. Costly relatively nothing.

Just think of a basic webform where you add in basic information of the person and SSN and within seconds having basic information. Name, address, SSN, race, sex, and age, what could be harder and thats the route E-Verify is heading.

Eventually I'd expect E-Verify to also be tied into criminal records, SS, and vital records. Now when thats done 45 seconds and someone is done. Now how big of a cost would that realistically be?

But I do find the sposed costs of currently using E-verify flawed. Its touted as a free online web program to use. I really doubt its going to take 3+ hours of webforms to check someone's eligibility. Consider that companies generally already have computers, internet, and trained HR people who know how to use both and small companies is just managers check. Learning how to use it should be easy as there are tutorials.

Seems like a lot of money to use the free system that takes just a few minutes per employee. Maybe those HR folks work reeeaaaal slow.

I agree, the only costs I can account for is training hours(training is free), a computer and internet connection. That's it. Most companies already have the equipment and internet connection.

And how do we put a value on stable American families and stable American communities where people believe that their government is working for them?

The Bloomberg report concluded that E-Verify costs small businesses that enrolled in E-Verify in 2008 an average of $127 to run each new hire query [and respond timely to a TNC/final non-confirmation (FNC) situation].

Most "new hire" queries are confirmed within 60 seconds. So the cost of confirming most "new hires" is much lower than $127.

I would imagine the non-confirmation costs are inflated. If the HR dept for a small employer is a single person and enrolling in E-verify doesn't entail hiring an additional person, there is no additional cost.

If the HR rep. is paid $42.33/ hr and a he takes 3 hrs to resolve a non-conformation, he may say this costs $127 of his time. However, it's not an additional cost. The company is going to pay him the same amount, with or without E=Verify. He's not working overtime or more than his normal number of hours.

The HR rep may be a little busier, but so what. He can take a shorter lunch, less breaks, do on-line shopping at home, etc.
