"This is bad, what they do," he said. "But what can you do? The people here are just working. They're not doing anything wrong.
Working illegally in the United States is wrong!

ICE Officials: 160 Clothing Plant Workers Undocumented

Last Edited: Wednesday, 25 Jun 2008, 3:49 PM CDT
Created: Wednesday, 25 Jun 2008, 9:14 AM CDT

HOUSTON -- It took Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials most of the day Wednesday to determine that more than 160 of the workers a northeast Houston clothing export company were undocumented.

A spokesman for ICE says the bust was the result of a year-long investigation after investigators were tipped off to possibly illegal employment at Action Rags USA. About 70 per cent of the workers are women, and two were juveniles.

"We're still going through various stages, making sure people aren't hiding, trying to secure the entirety of the building," ICE Spokesman Greg Palmore said.

The company, located on the 1200 block of Port Houston Street, exports used clothing to international markets.

The raid brought work to an immediate halt, but agents say the bust was in the works for a long time.

"It takes various steps to get to the prosecution stage," Palmore said.

By late morning, vans transported workers away from the facility in southeast Houston as family members arrived on the scene to find out where loved ones would be taken.

"They ain't doing anything bad. They ain't hurting anyone. They are here to make money," said Luis Patio.

At least one worker was let go at the scene after she was able to prove her legal status. Another 60 could released because they're pregnant or mothers of young children.

Action Rags USA refused comment on the raid.

Agents say they will continue to collect as much information as possible as the investigation continues.

A similar raid took place at a Shipley's Do-Nuts factory in April.

At least 170 workers detained in immigration raid

    Associated Press - June 25, 2008 2:35 PM ET

HOUSTON (AP) - Immigration authorities have detained at least 170 workers during a raid of a Houston used clothing company suspected of employing undocumented workers.

The Houston Chronicle is reporting that officials would not say what led them to plan the Wednesday morning raid at Action Rags U.S.A.

Ten pregnant workers were among those detained, and four employees required medical treatment. That included a woman who fell 20 feet off a stack of wooden pallets where she was hiding.

Action Rags U.S.A.'s Web site describes the company as a leading grader and exporter of used clothing.

Officials are working to determine the immigration status of the workers, and some have been released.

Well, I hope they nail the owners and executives and not just the workers. I would love to see the owner in handcuffs trying to hide his face from the news cameras.
