East L.A., 96% Latino, want city to call their own

Unincorporated area is called 'epicenter of Latino culture'

LOS ANGELES – East L.A. – birthplace of the lowrider, Los Lobos and Oscar de la Hoya – is to Mexican-Americans what Harlem is to the black community.

Now, it wants to become its own city.

Commonly mistaken for a part of Los Angeles, East L.A. is an unincorporated section of Los Angeles County, with more than 130,000 people – 96 percent of them Latino – packed into 7.4 square miles.

Cityhood proponents complain that East L.A. is treated as an afterthought by the county Board of Supervisors, and they want the community to take charge of its destiny.

East L.A. is more than 100 miles north of the border.
Instead of giving it back to Mexico lets drive the invaders out.

East L.A. is the birthplace of cholos and the basterdization of both the English and Spanish language. In Mexico, those who mix English with Spanish or use words such as "marqueta" , "breka" or "cora" are not considered real Mexicans in Mexico. They are looked down upon seen in a shameful way by the Mexican middle and high class.

If you gave East LA to Mexico, that would cause the invaders to leave, after all look at how they risk their lives to flee Mexico right now! When I say give it back to Mexico, I mean put a fence around the place and surround it with ICE agents. Then stop sending any US dollars to it. They would volunteer for a free trip to Mexico proper in a few days, then we could take the fence down and let Americans move in.

Neighborhoods seem plucked straight from Latin American villages: a backyard rooster can be heard crowing, or a man peddles the rice-based drink horchata from a shopping cart. Brilliantly colored murals of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Aztec chieftains decorate walls of housing projects and corner grocery stores.
IF THEY WANT A MEXICAN ATMOSPHERE, THEY SHOULD MOVE TO MEXICO! Real Americans dont want roosters in the yards, taco trucks moving along sidewalks, big murals of the Virgin Mary and Aztec indians all over buildings. THEY ARE UGLY EYESORES THAT DONT FIT IN WITH OUR CULTURE.
RIP Butterbean! We miss you and hope you are well in heaven.-- Your ALIPAC friends

More Mexicans live in L.A. County than any place on earth other than Mexico City.
