An El Paso woman was among several people arrested by Mexican federal police during an apparent drug deal in Juárez.
Authorities said the arrests were made Nov. 17 when a police patrol -- while searching for the killers involved in a triple homicide a day earlier -- saw an armed group exchanging packages.
During the alleged drug deal, police arrested alleged Azteca gang members Ricardo "Güero" Lerma Ramirez, 29, and Daniel Guillermo Medina Hernandez, 35, who are suspected of killing three people on Tapioca street.
Also arrested were Vicky Veronica Calderon, 28, of El Paso, Gustavo Borjas Lara, 18, and Simbad Kelly Loera, 35. All the others arrested are from Juárez.
Police seized an AK-47, a .223- caliber rifle, several
packages of marijuana, 931 U.S. dollars and 2,230 pesos and a stolen Ford Explorer and a Nissan Sentra with Texas plates.
In other news, federal police have also arrested three alleged extortionists with La Linea, or Juárez drug cartel, who collected quotas from business owners who were threatened with harm if they refused to pay.
Monday, police arrested Juan Angel Sanchez Martinez, 23, and Jaime Garcia Pichardo, 25, after they allegedly attempted to collect a quota from a business person, officials said.
On Nov. 18, police arrested Pablo Torres Gutierrez, alias "El 31," who allegedly told investigators he collected an estimated 120,000 pesos ($9,600) a month from various businesses, police said. When Torres was arrested, he
allegedly had a submachine gun, a grenade, various identification cards and was driving a stolen Chevrolet Silverado.
