Police warn women to lock & secure windows
SEASIDE, Calif.- Police are warning women to lock or secure their windows today. According to Seaside Police, a woman was sexually assaulted in her home earlier this week.
Officers say the intruder entered through an open window while she was sleeping. During the encounter a struggle followed and the victim was struck repeatedly with a hammer.
Police are still investigating the incident and say they are on the look out for the suspect.
UPDATE:

SEASIDE, Calif.- Seaside police arrested Ernesto Alonzo Thursday evening for a traffic violation at Sonoma Ave. at Soto St. Ernesto Alonzo matched the description for the victim in a violent home-invasion rape that occurred Monday morning, September 24, 2007.
Officers say the intruder entered through an open window while she was sleeping. During the encounter a struggle followed and the victim was struck repeatedly with a hammer.
Ernesto was arrested for driving without a license and for a possible immigration violation. Detectives later charged Avina with rape, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and other charges.
The department initially chose not to release information on this incident for fear that the suspect would flee the country. Once Avina was in custody, detectives went to his residence and found evidence that he was, in fact, in the process of moving.
Ironically, one of the photographs used to assist in identifying Avina in this case was from surveillance photos taken during the theft of a dog at the SPCA earlier this month

Frankly, the whole country should be warned as violent crimes by illegal aliens occur repeatably every day.

A man described by police as a Mexican national under investigation by immigration authorities and living in Seaside was arrested after a traffic stop Thursday evening as the suspect in a brutal home-invasion rape of a woman in her 50s that occurred in Seaside on Monday.
Ernesto Alonzo Avina, 23, was taken into custody about 6 p.m. when his car was stopped for a traffic violation at Sonoma Avenue and Soto Street, according to Deputy Police Chief Mick Vernon.
Vernon said Avina's car was seen running a stop sign and was pulled over. He was taken into custody without incident.
The officer who stopped him had been briefed before going on patrol by detectives investigating Monday's rape and burglary, Vernon said, recognized Avina as the suspect and called for assistance.
Detectives arrived, talked to Avina — initially identified as Gustavo Ramirez — and booked him into the city jail on suspicion of driving without a license and a possible immigration violation, Vernon said.
He was subsequently questioned by Spanish-speaking detectives at the jail and arrested on suspicion of rape, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and other charges, Vernon said, following a "positive interview" concerning the case.
The rape victim was treated at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula after the assault and released, he said.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were in Seaside on unrelated business, Vernon said, and told investigators that Avina, under the name of Gustavo Ramirez, was in their database and had prior contact with them. ICE agents placed an immigration hold on Avina, and he is being held without bail pending arraignment in court next week.
Police initially withheld information on the rape investigation, Vernon said, because they feared Avina would leave the country.
He added that circumstances of the case, which he did not disclose, indicated to investigators that Avina was not a general danger to the community.
Avina was a suspect early on in the case, Vernon said, and when detectives went to his house at 1697 Darwin St. they found it empty, so they put out a notice to be on the lookout for Avina's car to prevent him from leaving town.
Vernon noted that one of the photographs that helped detectives identify him as a suspect came from surveillance cameras that filmed the theft of a dog at the SPCA of Monterey County on July 21.
In that case, according to SPCA spokeswoman Beth Brookhouser, a 3-month-old female chow-mix puppy was taken from the shelter about 2 p.m. by three men driving a minivan.
The pup, named Snuggles, was featured as Pet of the Week on KION TV the day before she was taken, and the theft was caught on camera in the shelter lobby with pictures showing all three men entering the door and another of Avina carrying the dog and walking behind one of the others.
