    Extradition negotiations underway in Mexico

DENVER - Negotiations are underway to bring Raul Garcia-Gomez back to Colorado to stand trial for the murder of Denver Police Detective Donnie Young.

"I intend to get him back here as soon as we can get him back," said Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey.

But Morrissey warns that the process to determine where Garcia-Gomez will be tried will be long and complicated.

"This is not something that's going to be done in a week or so," Morrissey said. "It's going to take some time to get this accomplished."

The events leading to Garcia-Gomez's arrest began May 8, when two uniformed police officers were working security at a private party. Detectives say Garcia-Gomez shot both men from behind, killing Young and injuring Jack Bishop.

"We would love to have him back here because, you know, this is where he participated in the heinous crime, this is where we want to see him try," said Denver Police Detective Virginia Lopez.

But Mexico has a policy of not extraditing suspects if they face death as a punishment. And Morrissey says he has not decided what charges will be filed against Garcia-Gomez, or if he will seek the death penalty.

"I haven't made that decision yet," Morrissey said. "That certainly is a complicated decision that has to be made after speaking to the victim's widow, and certainly Detective Bishop's family members."

While prosecutors figure out what their next move will be to bring a suspected cop-killer to justice, others are relieved the manhunt is over.

"Even though he is not back here yet, he no longer has his freedom in which he took away from that officer the day he killed him," Lopez said. "So justice, at least right now, has been served up to this point.

Extradite him on one of the lesser charges like....ilegal firearms charges...get the feds involved on that. Then they can turn him over to you!!

You know: Did he purchase a gun without a permit and 3 day waiting period? Violations of federal law.

You know: Carrying a concealed weapon to a private party without a permit? Violations of federal law.

There's probably 20 or more of those types of laws the guy has broken before you even get to working here illegally; failing to file a federal tax return; and murdering the police officer.
