    Feds arrest 19 in immigration raids

    Pacific Business News (Honolulu) — Nineteen suspected illegal immigrants, some working on a downtown construction job, were arrested Wednesday by federal agents.

    Eight workers were arrested after a floor-by-floor search of the Pinnacle job site in downtown Honolulu, according to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Honolulu. Pinnacle is a luxury 36-story condominium tower currently under construction.

    Agents arrested 11 men at the Halawa industrial area. The business was not identified because of an ongoing investigation.

    All 19 people are being held in custody at the Federal Detention Center near the Honolulu airport.

    The contractor on the Pinnacle job was not identified by officials but the chief executive of Pacific Resource Partnership, a group that represents construction unions and unionized contractors, issued a statement suggesting that the contractor clearly knew their were illegal immigrants working on the job.

    “While the construction of the Pinnacle continued today, workers on the jobsite have expressed numerous concerns related to cash payments, unlicensed activity and safety. PRP believes this type of illegal activity is widespread throughout Hawaii,â€
