Mexico says it shares U.S. concern for violence on border

    ASSOCIATED PRESS

    8:29 a.m. July 27, 2005

MEXICO CITY – Mexico's government shares U.S. concerns about a wave of violence in northern Mexico linked to organized crime, a spokesman for President Vicente Fox said Wednesday.
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Tony Garza on Tuesday called on Mexico to do more to bring safety and security to the U.S.-Mexico border, citing 100 violent deaths along the border since June and the deaths of 18 Nuevo Laredo policemen so far this year.

"We share the concern about the levels of violence in the northern part of the country," presidential spokesman Ruben Aguilar said at a news conference. "We reiterate the need to elevate the levels of cooperation in the border zone, and reiterate – as Ambassador Garza put it – that it is a shared responsibility of both countries."

Aguilar read aloud passages of Garza's recent comments that praised the Fox administration for deploying federal agents and soldiers in border cities to combat gangs and drug traffickers.

The U.S. advisory is the third this year requested by Garza.

The past two warnings angered Mexico, which relies heavily on U.S. tourism and bristles at criticism from its powerful northern neighbor. But Fox's office appeared to take the new advisory in stride.

"Every country has the rights to analyze the situation as they wish," Aguilar said.

Purged Police Return to Mexico Streets

    By JORGE VARGAS
    Associated Press Writer

    July 27, 2005, 3:47 AM EDT

NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico -- Police officers returned to the streets of this violent city on the U.S.-Mexico border, almost six weeks after the entire force was pulled off the beat for drug testing and background checks in an effort to weed out corruption.

About a third of Nuevo Laredo's 700 police officers were fired in the anti-corruption drive, most for failing to take drug tests, said Daniel Pena, the mayor of this city across the border from Laredo, Texas, that has become battleground for gangs vying to control cocaine and marijuana smuggling routes.

Pena gave a symbolic order for police to retake the streets shortly after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, and 44 officers drove off in new patrol cars. They wore new black-and-white uniforms, replacing their formally blue outfits.

The rest of the new force of 460 officers will go back to work as soon as Wednesday, Pena said.

Before the mass suspensions, Nuevo Laredo had more than 700 police officers, but about 250 officers were dismissed, the mayor said. Federal agents and soldiers patrolled the city after the entire force was pulled off the streets 41 days ago.

About 100 people have been killed here since January in violence sparked by two powerful drug gangs locked in a battle to control key drug smuggling corridors around Nuevo Laredo.

Last month, the city's police chief was gunned down hours after taking office, and municipal police opened fire on a group of federal agents sent in to restore order, forcing President Vicente Fox's government to launch a purge of local officers.

A small gathering of onlookers cheered the police officers as they took up a new round of patrols.

"They should be cleaner," said Josefina Rodriguez, an employee at a cell phone distributor. "Now that they've been put the test and passed, that means they're clean."

The federal agents and soldiers will continue to patrol the streets along with the purged police force, Pena said.

"Relies heavily of US Tourism"....oh give me a break. Mexico relies upon our drug trade, smuggling trade, and "transfer payments" from illegal workers in the US.

US Tourism accounts for a speck by comparison.

80% of all oil revenues in Mexico go to the Mexican Government. What does the Mexican Government do with its share of the oil revenues?

WOW!! Thanks for the news Scuba.

Now that's just a lovely place isn't in a country that we are now going to provide "security services" for the United States under the Maniax Security and Prosperity Partnership Pact with Mexico and Canada. There will be no Congressional action. They are makng the deal with 300 trade and security "regulations" instead of "legislation".

    Oh My God.

Scuba, no I'm sorry I missed your post!!

    10 million to "help".

Don't they just make you sick?

WE have to get these people out of our Government.

Now Mexico has 10 million more to spend on running more drugs into the US; smugging more people into the US; of course that would be after they lined their pockets first.

How many Americans had to work for how many months to generate 10 million in cash for Mexico?

25,000 x 15% = $3,750 in total FICA TAX per year with 1/2 percent available for "aid" is $187 per worker.

10,000,000 divided by $187 = 53,475 Americans would have to work an entire year to generate enough tax revenue to give Mexico $10,000,000 "to help".

Why don't the 53,475 Americans just take a "day off" paid for by the US Government and go to Nuevo Loredo and round up these trouble makers?

Then we'd actually solve the problem AND save all that money.

Oh if you really want to get mad, go to the Social Security site and in the search. Type in Mexico and see what you see.
