    Feds sieze 50 Illegal aliens

FOXBORO - Federal authorities apprehended almost 50 illegal aliens early Wednesday after stopping several passenger vans as they traveled through Foxboro.

A total of 49 people were taken into custody by U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement agents with the help of Foxboro police, said Paula Grenier, a spokeswoman for the ICE office in Boston.

Of those aliens, five were discovered to have re-entered the United States after having been previously deported, Grenier said.

Another two were fugitives and two others were still being interviewed by ICE agents late Wednesday, she said.

Grenier said she did not know the nationalities of the illegal immigrants. They would be held at state and county facilities throughout New England, she said.

The other 40 aliens were released but were ordered to go to ICE offices for additional interviews about their immigration status, Grenier said.

The two fugitives had previously been before federal immigration courts and were ordered deported, but had remained in the United States.

The cases against the five who were previously deported and re-entered the country will be forwarded to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Boston for prosecution. It is illegal to re-enter the country after being deported, Grenier said.

Each faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the felony of re-entering the country without permission after deportation.

Up to 50 people were traveling north on Route 1 about 5:30 a.m. in a series of passenger vans, when they were stopped just north of the Pine Street intersection by federal agents and Foxboro police, Police Chief Edward O'Leary said.

They were taken to the Foxboro Public Safety Building on Chestnut Street, where they were interviewed about their identities and immigration status, O'Leary said.

Eva Millona, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrants & Refugee Advocacy Coalition, said she was concerned how Foxborough road stops were conducted.

"It is unclear to us what type of operation this was," said Millona. "Our concern is a large number of people being targeted and being stopped on the road."

Millona said her group has received reports that vans carrying workers were stopped. She said the group was working on getting more details. Grenier described the seizure as a "targeted law enforcement operation" by ICE.

"When we conduct these operations, we make the arrest when it's appropriate," Grenier said. "These are specifically enforcement actions seeking specifically targeted individuals."

O'Leary said the vans were traveling from Rhode Island, but he did not know their destination.

None of the aliens was left in the custody of Foxboro police, he said.

Federal officers had contacted Foxboro detectives on Tuesday seeking assistance in the enforcement action. http://www.thesunchronicle.com/articles ... 732152.txt

No, Eva, it is the other way around. The vans were stopped (perhaps overloaded) in concern for their safety and those other motorists on the roads. And even if they were targeting those who had re-entered after deportation, the rest can only learn that when you lie down with dogs, you can easily get fleas.
