The U.S. State Department announced that it’s raising the cost of non-immigrant visas and border crossing cards starting April 13.

Visas are issued to foreign citizens who wish to enter the United States for a variety of purposes. In a press release, the department said that the fees are going up to cover the cost of processing the visas.

“The increase in fees for non-immigrant visas will support the department and the expansion of facilities abroad, as well as for additional personnel that is required due to the great demand for these visas,” the announcement said.

Although most fees for non-immigrant visas are going up, two types will go down. The fee for the E -Visa (for traders and investors) will drop from $390 to $270 and for the K-Visa (for people engaged to U.S. citizens) from $350 to $240.

However, the cost for a visa for tourists, business, student, transportation, journalists and exchange visitors will go from $140 to $160.

Visas in the categories H, L, O, P, Q and R will go from $150 to $190.

Meanwhile, the border crossing cards for those 15 and older will go from $140 to $160, and cards for minors will go up slightly, from $14 to $15.

There’s good news for visas involving immigrants. Their cost decreased.

Applications from immediate family members and from those who have family preference went down from $330 to $230. Applications based on employment dropped from $720 to $405.
