Dear Mr. XXXXXXX:

I received your letter and appreciate hearing your concerns regarding illegal immigration in the United States. I understand how strongly you feel about this issue and would like to provide you with my point of view.

I understand your support for E-Verify, an internet-based system operated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in partnership with the Social Security Administration. This system allows participating employers to connect with Federal databases to determine the legal status of potential employees and the validity of their Social Security numbers. I support programs to help employers confirm a legal workforce and reduce unauthorized employment in the United States. At the same time, as the Department of Homeland Security steps up immigration enforcement, it should ensure that new policies do not harm legal workers or jeopardize potentially vulnerable industries in the U.S.

As you know, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has expressed his commitment to addressing comprehensive immigration reform. I believe that the government must be tough and smart to regain control of the U.S. immigration system. I support enhanced border security as one component to comprehensive reform, including the construction of a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico. I will be mindful of your concerns if Congress has an opportunity to debate immigration-related legislation in the near future.

Again, I appreciate your suggestions for addressing illegal immigration. I welcome you to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841 if you have any additional comments. Best regards.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator
