A few pesky points

Letter to Raleigh News & Observer

Tema Okun's Aug. 22 Point of View piece "While pandering persists, withhold votes" represented the "fantasy world" mentality of too many today.

Okun advocated voting only for candidates who support opening up our country to illegal immigrants and compares opposition to this silly idea to the devastation of the Cherokee people, the Jim Crow disenfranchisement of African-Americans and the internment of Japanese-American citizens during World War II. Okun's "love thy neighbor" mentality apparently applies only to illegal aliens and not to fellow citizens who think differently.

Maybe Okun should consider the following:

1. How can the United States remain a sovereign nation without controlling the borders?

2. How can we afford to pay for all of the "freebies" bestowed upon the illegal aliens?

3. What will happen to our standard of living?

4. What is fair about rewarding the illegal behavior of some while ignoring those who play by the rules?

5. What controls, if any, would Okun place on immigration?

The devil is in the details.
