FORT MYERS: A Fort Myers Police Officer is recovering from minor injuries Thursday morning after a drunk driver ran through a stop sign and slammed into his patrol car.

The accident happened Wednesday night around 9:30 p.m. on Marsh Avenue and Greenwood Avenue in Fort Myers.

Officials we spoke to said Marsh was shut down between Armeda and Glennwood while the Florida Highway Patrol investigated the crash.

Troopers said that the driver of a white Dodge Stratus, Gregario Martinez Jr., 21, was traveling westbound on Greenwood Avenue as he approached the intersection of Marsh Avenue.

Martinez ran through a stop sign and attempted a right turn onto Marsh Avenue.

That is when troopers said Martinez lost control of his vehicle, jumped a curb, struck a mailbox, a boulder, and then a fence.

Martinez was able to enter back onto Marsh Avenue; heading north in the southbound lane.

Martinez then struck Officer Jason Moore, 24, before coming to a complete stop.

Gregario Martinez Jr. was arrested and charged with DUI w/injury and property damage, no valid driver's license, improper right turn, and open container.
