The once rough waters of illegal immigration seem to be calming down in our area.

Bay County sheriff's officials say the numbers of illegals in the area are down and so are the illegal worker busts, and while this may be a success story for some, it leaves others in a limbo.

They usually work the jobs most people would think twice about doing, out in the hot sun. They've also been known to clean close to 100 rooms a day, but now this cheap, hard working, illegal, workforce seems to be fleeing away.

Juan says work isn't as available as it used to be. That's why many are going elsewhere.

Chuck, the St. Calii landlord, said, "They've gone to Atlanta and to Houston for work."

St. Calii rents to immigrants who he says may be illegal, and as they leave, so does the rent money.

"That's where I am right now, so I need to figure out what to do."

It's the situation for many beach renters, but Bay County sheriff's officials say they have a job to do.

For those like Juan, being in this country is still worth the hassle.

Bay County sheriff's officials are continuing to review statutes to examine how much authority they have to act on the illegal worker situation.
