    Thanks for the welcome!

Too many times I have had to take my elderly mom down to the emergency room for various problems, and even though paramedics have taken her there, she sits in the lobby because there are no beds available. Meanwhile, the doors of the ER open and out march loads of people that don't speak English.
Sorry to hear about the problems your mom has been having at the ER, vortex. Her situation perfectly illustrates how damaging illegal immigrants are to our health system, especially emergency medicine. My advice to you and your mom is to exaggerate symptoms, basically anything to do with airway i.e. difficulty breathing, will get one seen pronto at the ER. I started out in the ER so I know a little about how to work the system, as they say.

One of the main problems facing overcrowded ERs in states with sizable illegal immigrant populations, is well, illegal immigrants using the ER as primary care clinics. Upon realizing that medical personnel would not report illegal immigrant status to government agencies, illegals have free rein to overuse and abuse ERs. Many ERs in California have closed due to hospital budget shortfalls. If patients don't pay for ER services, the hospital goes deeper into the red, and soon the operating costs of running ERs are just too steep. These costs include providing salaries to attract qualified ER physicians and staff, not to mention medical and diagnostic equipments, among other things.

In California, anchor babies are eligible for Medi-Cal, while illegal immigrant patients are mainly listed as "self-pay", meaning they won't pay a cent for their care. So, ER physicians are seeing their reimbursements go down as our percentage of illegal immigrants and anchor babies rise. I've heard from more than one physician that these "self-pay" patients are the most likely to sue for malpractice. It's not an unthinkable scenario to have a shortage of qualified, medical specialists such as ER physicians in the near future.

As a pediatric RN, there are times when I feel that I'm at my breaking point too. That's why I don't think I'll stay in this profession for longer than the next 5-7 years, I'm thinking of pursuing a doctorate in Nursing in order to teach, or possibly going to pharmacy school.

I feel increasingly pressured to learn Spanish in order to simply communicate to patients and their families. Last year, a mom of an anchor baby made a complaint against me and other RNs at our unit, because we couldn't talk to her about her baby's care. Mind you, she complained to the Spanish interpreter, the very Spanish interpreter I had called in order for me to communicate with her at that time....guess she had more than a few brain cells missing too.
