FL: Martinez, Nelson wrong on immigration
Guest Columnist: Martinez, Nelson wrong on immigration

As a legal immigrant and a lifelong active Democrat, I must respectfully but vehemently disagree with Florida Sens. Bill Nelson (Democrat) and Mel Martinez (Republican) on the crucial matter of illegal immigration.
Their support of the so-called "Grand Compromise/Comprehensive Immigration Reform" was nothing but a sham — and the American people saw through it.
And as American citizens we saw the impact of what we as an engaged citizenry can do to impact and kill bad legislation.
The bill (S.1639) was merely a strategy used by the "establishment" (business interests, ethno-centric groups, elitist elected officials, mainstream media, open-borders lobbyists) to force America to give amnesty to 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens (and their illegal employers) while holding our national and border security hostage to that condition.
Americans rejected that, as well as the efforts of closed-door deal making by the Democratic leadership (particularly from Sens. Ted Kennedy and Harry Reid) to ram this bad legislation down the throats of all Americans.
In closely observing the process of this legislation in the past year, I became more and more disappointed with our Democratic Party's misguided leadership during this process.
Democrats may ultimately gain some political supporters in this debate, but they will lose me and many Democrats like me.
Now that this awful and doomed-to-failure "Grand Compromise" is set aside until a hopefully better one is offered, our esteemed Nelson and Martinez should be leading the bipartisan charge to immediately secure our borders first.
Here some novel but practical ideas for them to consider: How about taking the $5 billion a month we are spending in Iraq and use that money to:
• Secure our borders.
• Enforce laws against illegal employers.
• Help illegal immigrants to go back to their own countries to start businesses that will create jobs for themselves and their fellow countrymen.
America needs a new immigration system that serves the interests of its citizens not a bigger repeat of a broken system at the expense of its citizens.

You have to understand that Bill Nelson is without a backbone, a YES man and Martinez will be biased no matter what. Those two Senators HAVE to be voted out by the good residents of FLA in order to keep that state from breaking off and floating out into the Atlantic.
