Presidential candidate in SWFL to announce immigration policy

COLLIER COUNTY: Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson is choosing a county with a large farm worker population to announce an illegal-immigration policy.

Thompson is in Collier County today where a campaign source says Thompson will announce his immigration plan. It includes stripping federal grant money from cities and states that don't report illegal immigrants.

The source doesn't want to be named because the plan has not been announced.

Collier County has vast tomato farms that hire thousands of immigrants. Last year it was part of a two-county sweep with 163 illegal immigrants arrested in one weekend.

Thompson will make the announcement with out-going Collier County Sheriff Don Hunter by his side.

Fellow candidates, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, have also called for tougher immigration enforcement. They opposed a failed bill that would've provided a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants in the country. Arizona Senator John McCain supported the legislation.
