Flagstaff schools see drop in enrollment

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) -- Flagstaff's high schools have five percent fewer students this school year, a surprising decline that school district officials blame on the poor economy and possibly a crackdown on illegal immigration in the state.

Flagstaff Unified School District Superintendent Kevin Brown says overall enrollment in the district's elementary and high schools is down 2.4 percent from the previous fall. Enrollment stands at 10,923 students, down from 11,197 last September.

The district would lose nearly a million dollars in per-pupil state subsidies if the decline holds for 100 days.

Brown says he believes most of the drop is due to families leaving Flagstaff for other parts of the state because of pricey housing and relatively low wages.

A million dollars per pupil? What--instead of school buses, they are privately chauffered in limosines to and from schools?

    -----------------------------------------------------
There were 11,197 students. There are now 10,923, so they lost 274 students.

$1,000,000 divides by 274 is $3649.635 per student,

divide that by 100 days is $36.49 per student per day in lost per-pupil state subsidies.

What they fail to mention is that this money is the money WE pay in federal taxes every year. It's a tax savings for US taxpayers.

There are many areas flooded with illegals that are going to be hurting puppies when illegals get deported or these families simply move to another area for work. Our tax money was spent on 25 schools in less than 10 years......majority as a result of illegals and refugees.

With less students, they won't need that money. they are just use to having that money to spend , but they won't need that much.

I used to work in K-12 education and the money is the per pupil operating revenue that the government gives to schools. It is based on a yearly count of attendence.
