The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected Tuesday to accept an amendment to a sweeping immigration bill that would require requiring U.S. flight schools to have accreditation to issue student visas.

Judiciary Committee ranking member Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) is expected to offer the bill as an amendment Tuesday during the panel’s second day of marking up a comprehensive immmigration reform bill, Senate aides said. The amendment is based on legislation Grassley offered last year with New York Sen. Charles Schumer and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.).

The measure is reaction to a Government Accountability Office finding last year that 167 of 434 flight schools that can grant visas, to students were not accredited as of December 2011.

One of the 9/11 hijackers entered the country on a student visa to attend flight school, and two more entered on student visas and illegally enrolled in flight schools.

Lawmakers expressed exasperation that the issue during a hearing last July.

Despite expectations the amendment will pass easily Tuesday, a Grassley spokeswoman said Monday that the senator had not yet decided whether to offer it.
