Fmr. ICE Senior Atty: Border Deferred Action Screening Puts ‘National Security at Risk’

    by Ian Hanchett
    30 Jan 2015

John Gihon, former Senior Attorney for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said that a new directive from DHS ordering the Border Patrol to ask illegal immigrants about their deferred action eligibility “puts our border security and national security at risk” on Friday’s “Fox & Friends” on the Fox News Channel.

“This new directive from DHS has the potential to have a negative and detrimental effect on both our border security and therefore our foreign national security. It looks like an utter waste of time. These agents who are at the border are our first line of defense against terrorists, drug traffickers, and weapons smugglers. Every minute that they spend screening someone for deferred action eligibility is another minute they can’t spend doing their jobs, protecting our border, and keeping it safe” he stated.

Gihon continued that “to ask Border Patrol officers who have just caught someone who has illegally entered the United States and has committed one or more federal felonies, to ask them to screen this person for eligibility is unreasonable. Because so few of these people who have just entered the United States illegally could possibly be eligible for this sort of benefit and this sort of deferred action, that it’s unreasonable, and it’s a waste of resources and a waste of time.”

He concluded, “at the border, where we have to have the boots on the ground, we have to have these agents, who risk their lives every day keeping us safe, they cannot waste their time screening people for benefits when 99.9% of them are not going to be eligible. It puts our border security and national security at risk”

Oh wait a minute, puts our "national security at risk"? What about our American Workers who lose jobs and wages because of illegal aliens? This puts them at risk. What about our American citizens who are hurt and harmed, financially and physically by illegal aliens? This puts them at risk. What about our schools and hospitals who can't afford to educate or take care of Americans being required to educate and take care of illegal aliens? This puts them at risk. What about our public budgets, from local to state to federal, as all our public agencies and institutions are required to fund these people the same as if they're citizens? This puts them at risk.

For anyone in ICE or DHS or anywhere else in government to be whining about "national security" as if that's something special, they need to be whining about the harm illegal immigration causes to the citizens of our nation, because it SHOULD go without saying that any nation that leaves its borders open and gives its violators a free pass to work, travel, purchase, protest, rally, walk the halls of Congress, sign up for welfare, go to college, and on and on and on is a threat to national security.

And if ICE had been doing their jobs all the years their personnel were being paid to do their jobs, we wouldn't have this problem to begin with.

Didn't I read somewhere that only folks that have been here since 2010 are eligible for deferred action? If that's true, no illegals crossing the border would meet the eligibility requirements.

No, because the people crossing the border may be on their way back here returning from a visit or a shopping trip. The whole purpose of "deferred action" is amnesty for all and an open border, so Obama doesn't want those who went home for a visit or business or out of the country for some other reason to miss their opportunity for amnesty if they happen to be caught sneaking back in.

I agree, but anything that's truthful may appeal to somebody, so I'm all for the border control angle.
